in which my friends are horrible people
helelcoolj has been bugging me for the past few weeks to watch Shiki, which she describes as Higurashi except with homolust up the wazoo. We went home on the bus together with another friend who watches it on Thursday, and I was like "FINE GUYS, STOP HARASSING ME ALREADY, I'LL WATCH IT LATER." She glared at me and was like "AND BY 'LATER' SHE MEANS 'NEVER'. DAMN PROCRASTINATOR." OTL
My neighbor, who's a grade below me, came over to my house yesterday because her mom needed to use our oven. I was sleeping, but my aunt made her wake me up. Needless to say, I was not amused and needed coffee. Lots of it. We decided to screw around on facebook for a while and play Robot Unicorn Attack, but that got boring, so she was like "LET'S WATCH ANIME! 8D" I was like "Oh, my friends keep telling me to watch this one..."
WE GOT SO ADDICTED IT WASN'T EVEN FUNNY. My neighbor is a pussy, though, so when she finally had to go home (we watched through like four episodes at that point), she was like "I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS BUT I DON'T WANT TO WATCH IT ALONE FFFFF"
I ended up watching all twenty episodes aired so far in two sittings (I had to sleep sometime, guys) and alskdjlaksjd. The first half of the series, I was going between PFFFLOLOLOLOL and SLDKFJLSKDJFKLJ FFFFFF because it was arguably the gayest J-horror ever, but then it got all philosophical in the second half and I honestly don't know which half was scarier. You could handwave the scary from the first half as a matter of ZOMBIE VAMPIRES WITH GLOWY EYES but the second...well, to me, it was what made Higurashi scary for me: people doing things to other people, even if they weren't necessarily human. The latest episode, 20, in particular drove that point home with what happened in the last few minutes. (Ahahaha I made a bad pun without meaning to. Oops.)
I haven't watched anime in so long because a lot of recent stuff has been really shitty, but good God, I'm glad I listened to my friends and picked Shiki up. It has a lot of pacing issues, and the dramatic moments are more really bloody hilarious due to narm than dramatic, but it's such a good series. And needs more love. ):
