This is a perfect little piece! I absolutely love it. It's like Dean is in the eye of a hurricane. You describe this moment of silence so evocatively and the warmth from the little patch of sun and the dust motes dancing in it so graphically that I practically heard the quiet and felt the heat! I love those little moments. You have to cherish them when you get them and I love you for giving Dean this moment. He needs all of those he can get to get him through his life.

The exchange between Dean and Cas is minimal and yet it's worth volumes. But you've caught it all in those few sentences.

...the blue eyes peering straight ahead as if there was nothing else in all of creation to look at but the hideous painting of a clock tower hung over the empty bed.
Yes, this is so totally Cas! I can just picture him.

Dad, of course, would call that a weak excuse. Guy always had been a dick.Sad, but true. After a lifetime of hero-worshipping his dad this is what he now thinks of him ( ... )

Once more I am humbled by your flattering and insightful comment..... prufrock_26 April 17 2012, 17:04:30 UTC
Thanks! Once again, you've caught all these little details (the dust motes, the hospital arson) that I thought nobody would notice. And this -- the eye of a hurricane? That's beautiful. I feel like you summarized exactly what I was trying to say, right there.

RE: Cas's steady gaze: half the reason their conversation was so short is that it's just *so* fun trying to capture that expression from Misha. The man has crazy eyes, and they are delicious to write. :)

Thanks again for reading!

But Cas seemed content just to sit and stare at the gun laid out in pieces on the cheap particle-board table, to watch Dean's greasy fingers as they twisted and pulled and scrubbed, snapping and clicking the irregular chunks of metal into a recognizable weapon once more. Just to linger in the moment, Godless and speechless, caught like dust in the ray of sunlight cutting through the air between the ratty curtains.

I've quoted just to reread it. It's tactile, beautiful writing. I hope you write poetry sometimes too.

Poetry was actually where I started as a writer (yeeears back, at that age when you think stringing a few angst-filled words together - preferably lowercase - makes you a Soulful Poet). That never really went anywhere, and I haven't actually written a poem in years, but I do find that that background informs all my writing....basically, I have way too much fun playing with words.

So glad you enjoyed it!

Glancing out through the sun flare on the window, Dean considered smashing through the glass just to get a whiff of that misplaced late-August air.

Just to linger in the moment, Godless and speechless, caught like dust in the ray of sunlight cutting through the air between the ratty curtains.

God, I love this so MUCH.

Awww, thanks! This was one of the very first things I wrote for this fandom (like, before I joined LJ), and it still occupies a certain special place in my heart, so it makes me very happy to know you enjoyed it. ♥
