Although, as you're probably aware, in Mahler's case, he did try to beat "the curse of the 9" before he died. I forget the trick he tried, I just remember that it didn't work. Also, I forget - is Brucker's Symphony No. 0 counted as one of his nine? I know it was listed as a "study" symphony, but I couldn't remember if it counted or not.

Mahler wrote "Das Lied von der Erde" instead of numbering it the 9th. When he didn't die, he thought it was safe to write a numbered 9th and call it his 10th. He died shortly thereafter, in the middle of his numbered 10th.

Bruckner's 0th symphony doesn't count. See the wiki article on "The Curse of the 9th"...
