Long day, Jack mused as he walked in the front door of his apartment, rolling his neck on his shoulders to ease some of the tension lingering there. Really long day. Long days officially sucked. It had been true at SPD and it continued to be true now that he’d left. Closing the door wearily he yelped in shock as Kit ran slap bang into his legs, head butting his mid-calf.
“Trying to escape huh?” he said sternly, picking the cat up and bringing her to eye level. “Well, not today missy. Doctor’s orders.”
Kit gave him a superior look, then disdainfully looked away, her tail lashing against his side in rebellion.
“Yeah yeah, whatever,” Jack replied, setting her down on the floor. “The other two back yet?” He wasn’t holding out any hopes. Last week they’d been delayed by about three hours because Sky had managed to get himself kidnapped again. It had been the longest three hours of his life, with nothing to go on except Bridge’s tangled message about Sky going missing and something about a new tracking system which they thought was working. By the time they’d made it back home the dinner he’d reluctantly made for himself was still sitting on the table stone cold and he’d screamed himself hoarse yelling at Sky for being stupid enough to go missing yet again. He really didn’t remember how they’d ended up in bed but the next thing he knew he was holding onto Sky desperately, reassuring himself he was still there, still with them.
The week before that it had been Bridge. A minor lab incident that had nonetheless tied his former squad up for a few hours. That time when they’d got home Bridge hadn’t stopped hiccupping for an hour and a half. It had been incredibly irritating. Hanging his coat on the hook Sky had installed, Jack could see the flickering light on the answering machine and sighed in resignation, wondering what it would be this time. He pushed the button to start the messages and Kit twined round his ankles as Sky’s voice emerged from the speaker.
‘Hey Jack, it’s Sky.’ Yeah, like he couldn’t work that one out. ‘Bridge somehow managed to get himself body-switched with Z, but don’t worry, everything’s under control, he swears he can reverse it. Actually, he’d better because Syd’s going nuts, wants Z back in her own body because apparently they had plans for tonight or something and if she doesn’t get Z back she’s threatening to… Ah, you know what, never mind, it won’t come to that. But anyway, it looks like we’ll be late again. Sorry. See you later.”
Jack sighed and trooped into the tiny kitchen. Dinner for one. Again. It wasn’t that he didn’t understand, because he did. He knew how hectic and downright weird life as a ranger could be, had lived that life for three years. He was just tired of it, bone deep tired. He’d thought that once he’d resigned it wouldn’t affect him anymore. What had he been thinking? He snorted derisively. Obviously he hadn’t been. He opened the fridge and wrinkled his nose in distaste. Nothing looked appealing. Straightening, he let the door swing closed as he headed for the bathroom. Maybe a shower would cheer him up a bit, clear his head if nothing else.
It didn’t. He came out just as not-depressed as he’d been going in, but at least now he was clean. Towel tied around his waist he walked into the bedroom and stopped dead. Sky and Bridge were lying on the bed, Bridge’s hand resting on Sky’s chest as they slept. Torn between pleased surprise that they were back and annoyance that they’d been here the whole time, Jack solved the problem by sitting on the bed before wriggling in between them. Sky’s eyes blinked open before the former blue ranger gave him a sleepy smile and settled back down. There was a muffled ‘Hi Jack’ behind him and he smiled, patting the nearest part of Bridge he could reach. “Hi yourself.”
