Michael Schmidt was convicted of selling raw milk in 1994 and fined
$3,500. This past November he went on a month long hunger strike after his
farm was raided again. Ministry of Natural Resources officers, who enforce
rules for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs,
seized cheese-making equipment, computers and files on the raw milk
producer's farm, then charged Schmidt with running an illegal cheese-making
plant, contrary to the provincial Milk Act.
