London’s St. Joseph’s Health Care to Host U.S. Vice President Al Gore for Unique Event Profiling the Environment and Our Health
With a major motion picture and a bestselling book of the same name, An Inconvenient Truth, former US Vice President Al Gore’s message that global warming is the biggest moral challenge facing our global civilization is being heard.

St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation, in partnership with St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, is proud to announce that the former U.S. Vice President will be speaking in London on May 31, 2007 at the London Convention Centre in support of patient care, teaching and research at St. Joseph’s.

The event marks the Foundation’s launch of its new Signature Speakers Series and will feature a captivating presentation by Vice President Gore, based on themes from his motion picture An Inconvenient Truth, followed by a question and answer from the audience. While the event will focus attention on Gore’s environmental message, it will also provide a forum for St. Joseph’s Health Care, London to highlight the link between the health of our environment and that of the citizens of southwestern Ontario.

“There is a public need to hear Vice President Gore’s message,” says Cliff Nordal, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London. “There is irrefutable evidence of a connection between chronic health problems and the environment. At St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, we believe this is an important dialogue that needs to happen on health care and the environment and it needs to happen now.”

Southwestern Ontario, despite being one of the most economically advantaged areas within Canada, has a disproportionately high burden of chronic disease relative to other parts of Ontario.

Says Dr. David Hill, Scientific Director, Lawson Health Research Institute, and Vice President of Research, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London: “Diseases prevalent in southwestern Ontario include high rates of asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancers,” Hill explains. “While diet, sedentary lifestyle and age demographics are certainly likely to underlie the rates of illness, there is reason to believe that environmental pollutants are also contributing factors, since the incidence of most chronic diseases is higher in the basin to the east of the manufacturing and chemical industry centres in Michigan and around Windsor and Sarnia.”

“St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, in concert with Lawson Health Research Institute (Lawson), is ideally placed to study the effects of pollution and human health,” Hill continues, “since this is a regional centre for care and research into chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, rheumatology and cancer. Additionally, Lawson is the home of the Canadian Centre for the Study of Probiotics, which seeks to advance our understanding of bacterial balance and health.”

Gore’s message is one that could have a dramatic impact on the understanding of the relationship between health care and our environment in this part of Ontario, and may help to initiate the dialogue on how best to protect the health of our citizens by protecting our environment.

“Vice President Gore’s attendance in launching this Signature Speaker Series is significant and will enable St. Joseph’s to better inform the community of its leadership role in supporting the care of those with chronic illness in the region,“ explains Michelle Campbell, President, St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation, and Vice President, Fund Development, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London. “We know there will be strong interest in the community to be involved in leading-edge discussions focused on the impact of the environment on health. We also anticipate that the interest in Mr. Gore’s visit will extend well beyond southwestern Ontario.”
