flashily There's this Female Character Flowchart out there that I'm sure most of you have heard of already. If you haven't, let me sum it up for you: basically, all fictional female

YES. I never really took memes or comparisons like this seriously before - or even noticed them, to be honest. But considering that fandom seems to be dominantly made up of women, it's kind of sad how harsh and dismissive we are to women in anime or manga. I'm not saying female characters should be loved by default just because/if a person is a woman, but... I guess something someone said to me years ago sticks out in my mind: men are lauded and women are despised. I don't know if despised is really the right word but the general idea I think is accurate. And I never understood until recently how important things like this actually are, even in a hobby - how much damage it can really does to a woman's outlook about herself.
And like someone said above, I really wonder how the ones stereotyping women would react if this was done about male characters.
... Sorry, I went on for a while there and I haven't even read anyone posting this meme yet. I guess I felt inspired that you talked about women being awesome and that led me on a ramble. Hope that was okay.

Jay kay. I always like reading your rambles! And, yeah, I think there’s a thing about female characters too, like…people in general seem to be overly critical in both directions, if you know what I mean? Like, a character with flaws will be dismissed for being weak, or bitchy, or [fill in the blank], but a character who’s TOO capable is dismissed as a Mary Sue, or sometimes called out for “acting like a man” and all that awesome bullshit. I think female characters are held to impossible standards in a lot of ways to begin with, because…yes, there are certainly cases of women being poorly written, to mainly serve as love interests, “prizes,” or objects to drive the plot, and having little identity of their own beyond that, but there are so many instances where that isn’t the case, and people are still overly critical. I even get where that comes from, to a degree, in that people want female characters to “measure up” in comparison to the actually poorly written females you see, but it’s not as if there is just one way to be that. Like, can we please just realize that women are not a monolithic hivemind, and are, gasp, individuals?
There, now I rambled too. And I’m not sure if it made as much sense as I’d like, since I’m at work and typing this up in between doing other things. HOPEFULLY MY POINT CAME ACROSS AT LEAST SOMEWHAT.
What I like about Bri~ I think I’ve probably mentioned it before, but it’s still true: I like the commitment you have to improving yourself; the way you are not afraid to think about & examine things, and I always like talking to you too, and reading the things you write, because I think a lot of times you have a different perspective, or at the very least, a different way of phrasing things that makes me look at it a different way. I also like that you’re a lesbian sorry, had to channel Jon Paul a little okay with being silly/nerdy/whatever about the things you enjoy. I MISS YOU. I’m gonna try and use my LJ more so hopefully we can talk more often again! ♥
