Pop Culture's Greatest Anti-Heroes

Mar 10, 2010 18:52

This poll showed up on whedonesque, and from the summary, it looked like it only had male heroes, so I thought that we should totally run one for women, yes or yes? Because anti-heroines are awesome. But apparently, this looooooooooooooooong list of anti-heroes is, in fact, gender inclusive, and has TWO WOMEN on it. That's right, TWO. Out of 42 options, which is not even 5% of the list. Spike is on it, but no Faith, and I really, really find it hard to believe that Baltar, as much as I love him, is more popular as a character than Kara freaking Thrace. And what about Laura Roslin? There's no Emma Frost, but of course, Wolverine is on it.

Why does this poll exist? Also, I can't decide what's more offensive: having a males-only poll with no women on it or having a poll that's gender inclusive, but just happens to overlook all the awesome anti-heroines.

It would...kind of be awesome if everyone would just vote "other" and leave a comment pointing out the sexism, especially if "other" gets the most votes?

Then I wondered if I could make a list of 41 anti-heroines all by myself? And I failed. But only because I wanted to focus on the pop culture bit of it and couldn't use any of my literary anti-heroines so no Medeas and/or Klytemnestras, tragically. You should add to it to make this dream come true, friendslist. I have about...23. Getting 41 would be great, and having a 100 would be, like, having a list of things to read/watch for years to come. There may or may not be a poll later, but I'm generally of the opinion that they're all awesome in different ways.

Without getting into the formulaic details, I consider an anti-heroine to be one of the following: a protagonist who doesn't fit the conventional heroic archetype or has a fairly unconventional morality/questionable loyalty or an antagonist who has heroic qualities and is sympathetic.
