So I have some questions which I'm genuinely pretty curious about. You can answer any or none (obviously) of them.
Sometimes you write in a sort of arch voice. Sometimes you write in a voice which reads to me as being more "your own" - natural for you. Sometimes there's a more traditional poetic distance adopted, not formal, not casual, just sort of detached and descriptive. Are these changes in voice deliberate? Do you ever feel self-conscious about it?
Which one of these do you like best? (Mine: Pi and white)
I change the voices a lot because ever since I started writing, I've always liked to screw around and see how far into someone else's head I can get before it starts sounding crazy and unrealistic. A lot of them are just from the point of view of people who have been broken in some way. Usually they're women, but sometimes I play around with middle aged males and angst and see what happens. My favourite ones are variations and endings. full circle is an idea I first thought of when I was 13, and the bleakness of it strikes me even now. recipe is Margaret Atwood looking out at society from her high Ontario perch and wondering who these people are and how you'd make one for your own use.
hey it's selina just wanted to say i read them and they were interesting. i like pi best as well. i wish i could give some constructive criticism but it lends itself to the former comment, as in the changes in voice. when it seems like your voice it seems to breathe easier, i don't know how to say that. personal? then again i like recipe a lot as well -- which is totally imagined, yeah?
