I don't have Kafka's "He" sequence complete at home so decided to read it in the library as a break from searching.

Being hit this hard is something that must have happened a lot once, though it's a difficult experience to recreate in memory - dimensions get left out and within those dimensions not just miles and tons and days, nor of one sort of extension or density or time.

But at least not in a long while. I found the archipelago of oases too early. Today, though, another.

Some I knew - and surely had read at least most in his diaries? Maybe the new thing is just the assembly, but it's newer than whatever stars just started.

This man is my master. And, not that I'm including myself in this group, every writer's of consequence born after, like, 1900 I'm starting to think.

Strange how far he is from being the Kafka you first read, the mere Kafka, while being exactly the same. I guess because everything seeming mannered or opaque gets resolved into what writing must be once you know what it is.

Probably I'm just under his spell, and partly because I'm a surrogate Bishop this week. But what a spell! More spells, please. Spells forever.

Unrelated: I typoed my lj-cut warning of spoiling in previous entry. Er, sorry.
