listing 10 odd things / quirks / etc. [in response to .:ethos+aftermath:.'s post on nov. 16th].

1. it took me until third grade to learn how to spell my real name [always went by "mike" the "a" before "e" in michael always killed me.

2. in seventh grade, i was on the j.v. wrestling team. i was never really sure why, i think i saw it as a way to get in shape as i had a piss poor body image thing going on throughout middle school. i quit after being berated by the coach for missing practice for a dentist appointment.

3. before i moved to colorado [11-12 years old] i was training to be a whitewater rafting guide. i was in boy scouts and our troop leader worked for a guide company and would bring 3-4 kids along with him every weekend to show them the ropes, if i had stayed in PA, i would have been hired the summer i was 13.

4. in second grade i made the decision to drop down from the advanced reading and writing program [where we got to leave class and walk to another building and have a special teacher] to go back with the rest of my class to the regular stuff, and have always regretted it.

5. although i've never been tested, i believe i have some sort of dislexyia / learning disability involving writing. to this day i continue to have problems with writing lower case "b" and "d" as well as "j" and "q". something to do with the direction of the circles / arcs.

6. i shook hands with george bush sr. he spoke at a high school and then stopped at my elementary school for a minute during his first election campaign. i think i just happened to be within reach.

7. my dad wanted my name to be either "nevada" or "harley". instead i'm named for my mothers brother. thanks mom.

8. it takes me forever [hours at time] to both fall asleep and wake up, often times i abandon attempts at doing either. however, once asleep no sound seems to be able to rouse me, thunder, car crashes, earthquakes, etc. have no real effect.

9. while falling out of a tree [6th grade] i impaled myself on a branch, at the base of my penis. i think every think still works correctly. pulling your underwear open and seeing blood is not fun. then having to tell you parents about it is a even more exciting thing to do.

10. one day in first grade i got to school and then realized i had my shorts on backwards. i hid in a corner and fixed it. i didn't get caught. also in first grade i would often go to the back of the room to "sharpen my pencil" and would steal food out of other kids lunches.

!!!bonus!!!

11. from compiling this list i realize more and more that i'm terrible with dates / ages and relate more to where i was [i.e. grades] than my age. similarly [or so i say] i don't feel my body size has ever changed those older than me still feel / appear larger to me [even my mother and older sister - both 5'3" to my 6'] are still larger than me in my mind.

self, memory
