Then, one day, one of them notices that the other is bothered by something, but they don't know what it is. They want to help, but they don't know how. This time they have to actually talk about things, get the secret out in the open, and acknowledge how much the each rely on each other. What the secret breaking point is and whether those feelings are romantic or platonic are up to the author.
