The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month...
Armistice Day.
Veterans' Day.
I told the students at Dickinson HS today that tomorrow is our second most important holiday. While I am Christian, Easter and Christmas really don't cut it any longer, given that they are both on the wrong dates (Every so often Easter happens to fall on
April 17th [Check the date for Jesus' death], even more rarely on the 3rd day of Pesach, I imagine). So after July 4th, tomorrow ought to be our most precious
memorial (Think about it...) the day when we ought all to be finding a
Veteran (preferably one with grey hair, and a
stoop to his or her walk), and just thank them for taking one for the team.
I am a pacifist, and I'll be the first one to tell another Christian not to enlist. But there are countless people around the globe who have recognized our boys as liberators. We have had our imperial moments through history, as well. But I would say that on balance, our
standard is still more a rallying point of freedom than oppression.
I was inspired to make this post by
this. People wonder why I don't like the man...shout out, indeed!
Consider this a small bit of community service; here's the link for the
Medal of Honor website.
Enjoy your day off, everyone.
