The Postal Service provides 1 to 3 day service for First-Class Mail in the continental United States. Priority Mail receives 2 to 3 day service, and Periodicals also get expedited handling. Many of these service standards date from a time before e-mail and other electronic alternatives.
A recently released OIG paper Cost of Service Standards looks at how much the Postal Service could save by relaxing these service standards by 1 day. The paper finds that allowing 1 extra day to deliver First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, and Periodicals could save up to $1.5 billion
