When I had talked to Mark F, writer of the film Home of the Brave about revising my draft of C.O.E. back when it was called E.M., the biggest problems holding the film back from being considered by UTA were that it was too complex. The story arc has become simpler, and the love arc has been pushed big time. Then, characters were completely stripped from the original plot, where in place were a band of young boys ala Peter Pan and the lost boys. The opponent is less fantastical, and almost too close to home. So far, the film is looking richer, and more promising, but like most projects in this business, it's hitting the 2 year mark, and now a submission opportunity is coming up.
The first reading of the script, which lasted 2 hours, a little long for first submissions by a film writer when you need to get it considered, went by completely fine. There was even food constructed in a mini-diorama like fashion for key scenes in the film. I couldn't stop laughing because it was a surprise by the group.
The hard call I'm making with a film like this is that originally one of the underlying themes tied religion and the influence a human age had over it. Now, I'm making a complete, very strong statement about religion, ignoring sociological overtones. Not a complete 180, more like a twitch of the magnifying glass. The big thing with films is you wanna say so much in a creative way with the foundation you've made. For example, in a poem, you've got language that could in one piece be used so well to make a statement about this or that, but you have to save it. Leave the gold nuggets of your film to interpretation, and let go of literal on-screen opportunity. Let alone the idea that the sequel can deal with that topic in a different scenario. When I pitched the sequel delving into those initial themes, it seemed to everyone to be a better idea, and also no one would see it coming. That seemed pretty cool, but that's interesting that the first film was a sequel to something else. Almost reminded me of "A New Hope".
Some old members of my comedy group are rallying together to give some treatments I've created a chance. Then, old friends from college want to get back into the films I used to do with them. This could be really fun, and I love submitting stuff out, but never went the Youtube route. "But on the other hand..." it would be fun to use the XL1 that much again "but on the other hand..."
All I can say is this: C.O.E. has been one of the hardest scripts to fully nail down, but I know it will be alot of fun to pass around some key offices. The humor and action are all here, with some incredible moments I can't wait to share with Mark again, but this has got to be a winner. With something as delicate as religion, and pushing it on-screen in the US, you've got potential picketers-in-waiting looking for the next Mel Gibson to pounce on. That's why I don't want to say this is a religious story. It's a love story, and harkens back to the first love story all time. That's a hot topic, and I think I should pitch it that way over the religious card.
Miracle has been the first musical where I've had a tougher time with 10 lines than anything else in my life. I can't believe I was so distracted before, maybe it was the dialogue or something. I'm over it now.
The Darkness shoot went overwhelming well. The portfolio submissions were higher than I thought they'd be, but people don't usually go into this genre unless they're entering the photo in for fine art or black and white. The Winter shoot went great, and I got to bring out some old tricks on the models I hadn't done since two years ago when I used to use the old SLR camera I sold on eBay. It felt good to be back. Anyway, this coming week we're doing futuristic options, and it's going to be really complex. Makeup is possibly bringing in a team. Yeah, with the ring lights, I think this could do the same thing darkness did.
Life is busy, but alot of great things and people have come in, and I'm happy that all of it is coupling each other. Yeah, I'm a little disoriented, but life is good. I'm disoriented, because I'm surprised at how it all came about.
One hour more on one day means another day you'll be stripped of it. Time is against Ayn, Max, Cassine, and the rest of the gang.
Glad to be your GeGe.
