A little late on my end, but the series continues: what I was listening to ten years ago, and what I listened to a lot in 2011.

Ten years ago, I was starting to let pop back into my life, while still listening to some of the formative bands of my teenage years.
The Strokes - Soma (Is This It)
I listened to this quite a lot last year, when I realized it was TEN years old. Eep. It does not sound it to me.
Muse - Hyper Music (Origin of Symmetry)
Kylie Minogue - Fever (Fever)
Britney Spears - I’m a Slave 4 U (Britney)
As Ro says, “Brit-Brit x The Neptunes = perfection”.
Mandy Moore - In My Pocket (Mandy Moore)
If Britney is my favourite popgirl forever and ever, bad decisions and all, Mandy runs a close second for being her opposite. Her early music (Candy, anyone?) is such a guilty pleasure - but I am unashamed to say I love this song.
Usher - U Got It Bad (8701)
N.E.R.D. - Truth or Dare (ft. Kelis and Terrar)I know, In Search of… is technically a 2002 release. But there was a version in 2001 which was scrapped and I like this version of Truth or Dare better.
Backstreet Boys - All I Have to Give (a capella) (Black and Blue)
Elbow - Newborn (Asleep in the Back)
Radiohead - Pyramid Song (Amnesiac)
THIS SONG. I love Amnesiac - I loved it from the first moment I heard it. I know people feel it’s cold, and yet it so perfectly conveys isolation in a way that kills me. Each time I hear this song I feel like it cuts right down deep inside and fills me up and makes me want to cry at the same time.
Ryan Adams - Nobody Girl (Gold)
I love this song so much, and I have been sitting here for days trying to think of the words to articulate why, but I just can't; it has too much personal meaning.
vs.
These are the songs (rather than the albums) that I listened to over and over this year just past.

Blink-182 - After MidnightI don’t love the album. In fact, I found it tediously same-y. (My sixteen year-old self is horrified that I even typed that sentence.) But I can’t stop listening to this song; it’s a good distillation of things Blink does well - teenage feelings that feel so urgent at the time, those stupid things we do when we’re young to pass the time.
Selena Gomez and the Scene - Love You Like A Love SongAHAHAHAH, this song is such a scary scary earworm. So I watched the video for this and my only thought was “…eh. She’s such a pretty, blank little doll.” And then for the next few days, all my brain could do was kept sing, “re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat” at me. It’s hypnotising; surely it’s the only reason that I have now watched Monte Carlo and am considering watching Wizards of Waverley Place. *cough*
Deep Sea Arcade - GirlsAussie band that likes their 60s pop - jangly guitars, a relaxed surf feel.
The Strokes - Machu Picchu Cold War Kids - Royal BlueThis album (Mine Is Yours) almost made it into my top 10 for 2011 because it’s such a solid album, full of great, catchy songs like this with the familiar stompy CWK beat and bell-like melodies.
Bright Eyes - Shell Games The Decemberists - Calamity SongAnother album that almost made it into the 10; I mean, who doesn’t like sea shanties (that aren’t about the sea)? I just don’t find it as memorable overall as the two before it, but it’s still full of great songs.
Patrick Stump - This City (ft. Lupe Fiasco)Patrick still looks like a skinny alien, but kind of a hot one in the video for this. Also, it suits his voice so much, this catchy and heartfelt and anthemic slice of pop.
Adele - Rolling in the Deep Eisley - AmbulanceThe delicate heartbreak in this is perfectly sad and beautiful with just a hint of the anger underneath. A lot more subtle than A. Lazzara’s take (from last year), and just as great.
Taking Back Sunday - Call Me in the MorningI had a hard time picking between this and the screamtastic El Paso, two songs at opposite ends of the feelings spectrum. But this won out for being such a pretty song while building and building to such a heartfelt, emotional climax.
