Things wot I have watched (May-ish edition)

Jun 11, 2011 23:26

So I went to
sinpozium today and it was fun and fannish and I talked to new people without dying of nerves so it was all of the good. :) I will be sad to miss out on the program tomorrow...

But I think I mentioned a few times today that I never post anymore, and
littlerhymes told me firmly to just write, dammit (she said it in nicer terms, heh) so here I go. I started this post a month ago since I've been watching a lot of TV, but it's just been sitting around in draft form, languishing -

Things I have been watching by SQ, aged twenty- mumble

1. Community
So I mentioned this briefly in a previous post that I mainlined 16 eps of Community on a 9 hour plane journey recently. *cough*

Cathay Pacific has full seasons of some shows on their in-air entertainment system and on my flight out I started watching Community season 1 late in my flight. I got through 4 eps and I thought, "Oh yeah, this is pretty fun. Guess I'll get the rest of the season when I get home." But on my plane trip home, I couldn't sleep and decided to watch a few more eps and before I knew it, it was about 7 hours later, we were landing and I'd almost finished season 1, LOL.

And then I watched another um, 30 episodes in the last month to catch up all the way to the end of season 2.(!!!!)

So, yes, in case any one of you were at all wondering why I haven't been posting or answering comments or writing or doing anything else productive, I'm pretty sure you'll know exactly why by the end of this post. Ah, sweet sweet obsessive completion and procrastination...

2. The Vampire Diaries

And speaking of mainlining things, I may also have watched 13 episodes of TVD season 1 over the last two weeks. I blame
littlerhymes for ALL OF THIS. She handed me the season 1 DVD and has been talking it up for a while now in rapturous delight after all...

And around ep 6 or 7, with the wonderfulness of those scenes in the Salvatore house with Vicki and Damon, I stopped being able to watch one ep at a time and now I am almost finished with season 1 and today Ro gave me a disc with all of season 2 on it and omg I can't wait!! I <3 Caroline and Damon and Elena and Bonnie and Vicki (;__;) and Anna and even Jeremy and Stefan when they're not completely emo about things (admittedly, they do have a lot to be emo about).

3. Hawaii 5-0

I watched the first ep of season 1 just a few weeks ago and wow, I can see the exact moment Steve falls for Danny and then does so over and over again over the course of this one episode.

So I started reading fic as they were rec'd on my delicious network, then started watching eps on and off as they showed on free-to-air. But eurgh, I'm a total sucker for crime-solving procedurals - I'll give them all a try - but this is one of the first times I can remember a procedural *not* reeling me in with the crime/puzzle-solving. Part of it is *how* they go about it - the giant WTFs of the logic the show uses, the fact it's so problematic re: violence and masculinity at times. And that's not to mention the struggle I have with the fact that while it's one of the few primetime shows that features plenty of Asian actors, there's that thing where vaguely Asian-looking people are all interchangeably pan-Asian and not, you know, their actual specific ethnicity.

But then the shallow part of me kicks in and says a) I love (almost) everything about Danny - I mean, I totally get it Steve!, b) I didn't get it before but when Alex O'Loughlin smiles? *swoon*, c) the show's so goodlooking - and Hawaii doesn't look half bad either *boomtish* and d) oh yeah, the dynamic between Steve and Danny is so so yummy for a fangirl with even faint slash goggles on.

But also, I read a whole chain of posts about the finale and double eurgh. Boo to [spoiler about Danny]. Even the presnce of Larisa Oleyniak, and the fact that Masi Oka has been promoted to a show regular for next season does not cheer me up about watching on.

So, yeah. Be as kind as to point a girl to a good primer or two, please, and let me know which are the eps I really need to watch, and the fics I really need to read, and I think I can live with that, and that alone.

4. Castle

Ahahah, this is one of my procedural guilty pleasures. I hate Channel 7 here - one week they'll show a season 1 ep, another week they'll show two season 3 eps back to back and out of order. So I have absolutely no idea and don't care about the narrative flow, I'm just in it for the stupidly entertaining plots and my weekly dose of Nathan Fillion adorableness (and occasionally to ogle Stana Katic's (season 3) hair).

But I watched the soap opera ep (3.17) recently and...yikes. How did Castle fans deal with that 'flattering' portrayal of the thinly veiled dig at themselves? Bleurgh. Oh Tina Majorino, why did you have to be in this one?

5. SNL

The JT/Gaga episode was pretty fun. Justin was just so charming in his opening song-and-dance monologue about not singing or dancing, and the regular sketches they reserve for him are pretty reliable - I mean, I like the 'Bring it on down' variations, the craziness of the Barry Gibbs Talk Show (now that Jimmy Fallon isn't as bad at breaking as he used to be) - and creepy love tunnel animatronic beat-boxing Justin made me lol and lol.

And then there's 'What's My Name'. Not gonna lie, I made have shrieked when they brought out the guy who was "in NSYNC with you! But I'm not Lance Bass, you, or Joey Fatone". In my little popslash heart, I only hope that Chris and Justin totally talked about this before he went on and it was his own shoutout to Chris. I really really hope. :DDDDDD:

Of the musical performances, I really liked The Edge of Reason done solo on the piano Stripped back occasionally suits Lady Gaga - that said, she still performed wearing an insane black plastic romper with fishnets and a gold cardboard semihalo, heh.

Not from the season finale, but I also really liked the Lonely Island/SNL Digital Short from a few weeks back with Michael Bolton (yes, I know - I never thought I'd be saying that about something involving Michael Bolton either). But yeah - Jack Sparrow, if you haven't seen it (NSFW, language mostly).

My fave line? "Okay, turns out Michael Bolton is a major cinephile." :D!

Somewhere in all this, I've also been working, eating delicious foods, reading some great books, watching movies, going to gigs, and trying to teach myself the basics of vidding (not very successfully). But all of that will now have to wait for my next post (in at least a month's time, if at all. HAH!).
