The Academy Is... / travelling songs

So I may have been looking forward to this concert with an disproportionately large amount of excitement...

The Academy Is...
28/8/09 @ UNSW Roundhouse

Oh, I hope they make good on their promise to come back as soon as they can, though it sounds like it'll probably be next year at the earliest. I had a lot of fun and made a lot of heart eyes at the stage last night. :)

William was on - smiley, happy, in good voice. Mike no longer has all that hair to hide behind, and yet he was surprisingly cheery, coming forward and grinning ferally as he played. Sisky shook his massive amount of hair, Chislett was focussed and a little reserved, and when the lighting allowed me a glimpse of Butcher he was, as always, half naked and pounding away at those drums. Awesome.

Cute moments: William doing the Thriller/Backstreet’s Back dance move (ahaha, zombie arms), William ruffling Sisky’s hair a few times and hugging him from behind, the heart-in-mouth moments when William launches himself off Butcher’s riser only to keep singing away, William tapping away at that cymbal at the end of um, Big Mess I think, Chizz’s guitar solos, and the nice way Chislett, William and Butcher harmonise at times. And I got to hear After the Last Midtown Show!! What more could I ask for? (except a longer show, of course.)

Almost Here
Summer Hair
Slow Down
Neighbours
The Phrase That Pays
Beware Cougar
Checkmarks
After the Last Midtown Show
We’ve Got A Big Mess On Our Hands
About a Girl

Here's some video of Summer Hair = Forever Young. I like it because there's William on his knees, literal hand actions, and Sisky playing to Butcher. :)

Afterwards,
erilyn and
hnix found us and we ended up having impromptu bandom babble time, which was fun! Then we offered, since we were heading the same way, to catch the bus with
jocondite and send her home, but we kidnapped her and went in search of coffee instead. :D

Anyway, long story short, I challenged
littlerhymes to make a travel playlist, and she challenged me back.

Here is the travel mix, version Ro.

And here is mine. I think I lost because I don't think this is about travelling anymore. But in my head it's a narrative about two people who find each other, travel around for a while, lose each other, travel some more apart, and then (maybe) find each other again.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Car Song ... Elastica

Here we go again
I'm riding in your car

Cars and Calories ... Saves the Day

Her life was magazines and faithful TV screens selling an empty dream
of cars and calories and everything in between the sun and Saturn's ring

Joyriders ... Jarvis Cocker

Mister, we just want your car
'Cause we're taking a girl to the reservoir.
Oh, the papers say it's a tragedy
But don't you want to come and see?

Car ... Built to Spill

I need a car
You need a guide
Who needs a map

The Heartbreak Rides ... A.C. Newman

"Allez!" she cried.
The heartbreak rides for free.

German Motor Car ... Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s

This is how you ditch someone who drives you mad

Rental Car ... Beck

taking me far
far as a rental car can go

I Woke Up in A Car ... Something Corporate

I've never been so lost
I've never felt so much at home

Hop A Plane ... Tegan and Sara

You can't just hop a plane and come and visit me again

Train Song ... Feist and Ben Gibbard

Travelling north, travelling north to find you
Train wheels beating, the wind in my eyes

Another Travelin’ Song ... Bright Eyes

Well I'm changing all my strings
I'm gonna write another travelin' song
About all the billion highways
And the cities at the break of dawn

music, mp3, mixtape, tai
