It was a high school graduation. The two of them were standing about twenty yards apart, each pretending to be talking to their group of friends. Every few seconds they would catch a glimpse of each other out of the corner of their eyes, prompting each of them to quickly turn away. She was wearing the customary pearl colored gown with matching cap, while he was draped in navy which shined when it caught the sun just right. Only ten minutes had passed since the two of them had been high school seniors, but as the last student crossed over the raised stage in the center of the football field on that spring day they were graduates. There had been a flurry of movement as proud parents flooded into where their children were already milling about and suddenly they were only ten yards away. Pictures were taken, hands were shaken, and cigars were distributed all while he and she kept exchanging glances. Soon everyone was starting to file from the field; only a couple groups were left behind, including both her and his groups. As he tossed another glance toward her, but, this time she did not turn and neither did he. She smiled and so did he. He waved gently and so did she. They stood locked in a shared visual embrace for almost a full minute.
“Hey, Brendon,” one of his friends said. “We are heading out, you want to come with?”
She gave him a pregnant smile as if she expected him to walk over to see her.
”Not again,” he said to himself answering with her with a quick shake of his head. “That isn’t me anymore.” Turning to his friend he nodded and headed toward the gate.
For someone who lost their virginity during a board-game, he has had one hell of a journey.
