Doing laundry the other evening, I led the charge with whites. Dress shirts, t-shirts and socks mostly and a few towels--you know--just for fun. Coming off a client-relations gig where I was on-site with the client, my office shirts were more Brooks Brothers than, say, Stafford or "Old Glory" and ran between $70 - $80 per for the most part. Nearly all were white as I just dig on the Malcom Shabazz/1950s G-man aesthetic. I took them out of the dryer the following morning, and when I went to hang them, I found them all pockmarked and stained with blue ink.
Not a tiny mark here and there, and not something that we can really "SHOUT IT OUT" with either. Basically, about $300 in shirts are now probably best suited for cleaning the chain on my bike. One of the five other people who live in this building did laundry and had a pen in their clothes when they used the dryer. This pen placed ink all over the walls of the dryer and no doubt ruined their load as well. But rather than a) placing a note b) knocking on a door and telling the rest of us c) cleaning it up, they did nothing.
So inquiries have been made. I just crossed paths with the last kid I'd yet to talk to and no one has any idea about it. Everyone who uses the laundry room knows nothing about it. "I only use pencils" was the best line from the most likely suspect. (runner-up: "I don't even use pens.")
This, I think, bothers me more than anything else. The cowardice of denial: I find it absolutely repulsive. To be an adult is to take responsibility. Anyone past the age of twenty-five who can't stand tall and deliver the truth even when it might be a little bit difficult, I have little respect for. If they were thirsty I'd give them water, and once done advise them they can get out my sight. If you can't stand behind it, don't do it; if you fuck up along the way, deal with it. I honestly grapple with why that seems so hard for some people. A great deal of people, actually. Arguments for abortion, the lot of 'em.
So yeah - if anyone has wardrobe ideas, links, opinions on men's fashion, by all means hook me up as the next few weeks will consist of countless hours trying to find things I like to re-stock the closet. Low-key, understated & well-crafted are keywords.
