DVD Release Party Post. While I was at work. Waiting to get to Best Buy for my 2-disc DVD. And mourning the fact I have the Blu-ray, but no Blu-ray player! D:
“Are you coming, Spock?”
“Captain, I must confess, I do not understand the apparent excitement that this holovid release has created.”
“It’s a remake, no, a re-imagining, of the old Earth classic, Spock! Surely at the Academy you saw the original Galaxy Voyages?”
“I did. However, even at that time I was unable to comprehend the high regard so many placed on the piece. While I would hope this re-imagining is more accurate it its portrayal of space travel and its set design more technologically advanced, I still fail to see why this ‘vid’s release has led to the state that we are currently experiencing.”
“I assume you mean the dressing up?”
“Correct, Captain. I assume your current garb has some meaning relating to Galaxy Voyages…?”
“Well, yeah. Don't you remember, Spock? In the ‘vid, captains wore purple, since it was the color of royalty. Pretty fitting, huh? And you see Bones there? In Voyages, the doctors and their staff wore these green suit things called “scrubs.” They were easy to throw away when you got blood on them, which I guess happened pretty often back in those days. I’m still not sure how Bones got his hands on a set of authentic antique scrubs, but it’s great!”
“I see. I suppose the phrase on Lieutenant Uhura's top is also Galaxy Voyages related.”
"What is she -- oh! Yeah, 'Voyager Girls Do It With Logic.' Just be glad you haven't seen Gaila's top, Spock."
"I assume it does not meet Starfleet's current regulations on personnel attire?"
"Most definitely not. But look! If you buy the Andorian version of the holovid, you can get these awesome little pins of the different Voyage departments!”
“And what, Captain, does one do with those ‘little pins’?”
“You collect them! Or I guess you would probably sell them on Fleetlist.com or something. And if you buy the Capellan version, you can get a model of the starship!”
“Which I assume serves the same purpose as the pins?”
"They're collector's items, Spock. They don't necessarily have a specific purpose. You get them to remember the release of the 'vid. I guess Vulcan doesn't do that sort of thing?"
“I can assure you, Captain, that Vulcan will not be offering any small collectibles with the purchase of the holovid. Most probably, the holovid itself will not be available for sale on Vulcan. Watching a remake - forgive me - a re-imagining of an outdated, rudimentary program would be considered most illogical.”
“So…I take it that you won’t be joining the crew and me for the Federation-coordinated viewing? All the Federation planets will be watching the ‘vid at the same time. They’ve even set aside a specific comm frequency for everyone who wants to talk about the ‘vid!"
"I--"
"And you know they released it on the new holodisc format too, right? Lucky for us, Starfleet had a holodisc projector installed at our last docking, since I hear personal projectors are still pretty expensive. The holodisc version is supposed to have a lot more special features than the standard holovid."
“While dressing in an outdated color-coded system, collecting small pins and miniature spacecrafts, and watching behind-the-scenes footage no doubt has an appeal to many, you are correct, Captain. I will remain on the bridge at this time.”
“If you’re sure…who knows, Spock. Someday there might be a holodisc made based on the Enterprise. And people would wear gold or blue or red - well, maybe not red - to the release! Don’t give me that look, Spock. I saw that eyebrow.”
“Indeed, I find the odds of that occurring to be highly unlikely, Captain.”
