Something very exciting happened today- a friend of mine that I lost touch with close to 15 years ago, I was able to get a hold of him on facebook. I sent the profile who I thought was him a message over a week ago and he just got back to me today. This really made my day. He looks great and has an adorable girlfriend. They look so damn cute together. This thrills me to no end because he looks happy. His mom and pop look good too. I'm so happy for him.

I love facebook. I've managed to get a hold of so many people that I cared about and I just keep finding more. It's really wonderful.

The heat appears to be working today, which is good considering how cold it is outside (50 F). I'm freezing; when I get cold, I stay cold. What I need is a hot shower. Also, it's just so windy out and the building windows are so terrible when it comes to keeping the heat in and the cold out. I need to get a curtain and a rod for the bird room so they won't freeze.

The socks I'm making for C. are coming along *so* nicely. The second one is a lot nicer than the first one. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that her first sock was the first sock I ever made. I thought I hated making socks, but after the first one, they truly are a joy. I'm not even done with the first pair and I'm plotting the second pair.

I have to go to the butcher soon to get some short ribs for dinner tonight. For those of you that buy your meat at a supermarket, stop. Butcher prices are comparable, if not cheaper, and the meat is *so* much better. We don't have many butchers out here, the nearest one being a 20+ minute drive without traffic, but it's worth the schlep up there in bad traffic for their meat!! It also really helps that they'll bend over backwards to give me exactly what I want. I know whole foods has a very lovely butcher, but nothing beats the feel of walking into the old style butcher market. It makes me feel like I'm back in NYC in the 80's-90's instead of the commercialized, hyper yuppie central that whole foods is. I can't stand them so much that I even ended my last sentence with a preposition. Poo-poo, Whole Foods.

I don't hate them, they're great for a lot of things; I just happen to know a variety of better, cheaper places with WAY better service that have a nicer feel to them than Whole Foods. They get first shot at my money.

Back to the short ribs- I'm going to braise them with lovely rosemary. Lots of places say to serve them with polenta or mashed potatoes. I'm thinking polenta would be nice. Since I'm not in school or working and have a lot of time on my hands, I'm trying to make really lovely dinners for me and Ari. He's having a really difficult time with the days getting shorter, sun rising later and setting earlier... it's killing him. He can't seem to get out of the house before 9 am, which means he doesnt get home until close to 8 pm. Then he has school on top of it all and his first exam tomorrow. Him coming home to very well thought out meals has been an utter joy and stress reliever for him. The meals don't even take that long to make since I've been making sure to plan them out in my head. I thought winter was going to be horrible because all of my favorite veggies are out of season, but this year I managed to switch gears instantly to the winter selection.

hooray. time for a hot shower to get clean and warm, and then off for short ribs!
