Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford

Wow. I've had this book on my desk for some time now. I've been a little swamped with all the reading that I have to do, so I haven't had a chance to open it til now. I don't even recall now, how I heard of this, but I'm glad that I finally got to it.

Fifteen-year-old Jeff wakes up in a hospital after an apparent suicide attempt. This first-person narrative has 45 chapters that coincide with the 45 days of his involuntary commitment in a mental institution. Jeff is in deep denial about his suicide attempt although the gauze bandages around both wrist belie this. He's also a sarcastic smart aleck bent on unsettling his seemingly imperturbable shrink "Cat Poop." He reluctantly joins group therapy sessions where we learn a bit about other troubled teens in crisis.

This frank, sad, funny riveting read is better suited toward more mature YA readers.
