Further evidence that Management is light to Scudder's Dark... thespice February 27 2005, 03:43:03 UTC
I find it really interesting that when Ben wanted to heal Management, Management - though tempted - refused. After seeing what happened when Ben healed Scudder (without Scudder protesting), it seems to me that Management was well aware of what it would have taken to heal him. Scudder's face was superficially scarred up. But Management's body has been ravaged. I can only speculate what kind of death toll there would have been if Ben had laid his hands on Management's. And I think Management refused Ben's help becuase of the lives that would be lost.

I also find it interesting that in the dream sequences of Season 1, Ben woke up to find his body had been eaten by the bear. He dreamed himself as Management, and not as Scudder. Then again, when the Usher was persuing him in his dream, wasn't he also seeing himself as his father? Those dreams were more confusing. Sometimes it seemed as though Scudder was the one pursuing...Hmmm.

Also, if we are to assume that Mangement did transfer his powers to Ben at the end of Damascus, and that the Carnivale coming back to life was actually the lifeforce in Ben, it indicates that Management's plan all along was to die at Ben's hands. But first he needed Scudder to reveal Ben's opposite.

If Management is aware that the line goes from Dark to Light to Dark to Light, etc., Management may have been aware that his own offspring was evil, which is why he was a "bad man" who tried to kill his children. Then again, if he knew all of that, he shouldn't be surprised to find out that Ben's opposite was his son. Ah, confusion. Layers upon layers.

So far Scudder, even if he really did want to bow out of the fight, and just be a man, has been completely motivated by selfishness. Keeping his own life out of danger, even abandoning his son (who I assume he knew would eventually have to be caught up in the fight).

Also, he was an old man when he scarred his own face, so what prompted him to do that all of a sudden? Why not deform himself much earlier and go into hiding? Was it really just a disguise or was their more to it? Seems to me the lazy bastard just doesn't want to assume a role of power, and hey, I can dig that. But it totally sucks to manipulate your son into getting rid of your enemy.

Also, curious to know why Scudder in Ben's dreams is so different from the real Scudder. There's always been something paternal, sad and kind about Dream Scudder.

But if Scudder really is the Usher of his generation, I wonder if Justin needs to kill him to absorb his power, just as Ben (possibly, we're still not sure) kills Management and unknowingly absorbs his power.

And, of course, if the Usher really is Scudder, then that really does mean Ben and Sofie are half-siblings.

As for Sophie, I believe she's being influenced by Justin's sermons. I think she's headed for California. Given Justin's recent young maid fetish (to contrast his old maid sister - heh!), my guess is Sofie will find work as a maid in his house.

You are correct all the way down the line! I think, as far as the sofie thing, is that what if she was raped by the 'former' usher before Scudder came along? I mean, think about that whole 'running from his destiny', maybe it was that he was running from Management, who was fully realized by killing his predicessor, and Scudder, who just ran instead of seeking out, powerless to stop management awaits his death and his escape, but, management is taken down by the bear of Lodz. Scudder returns home, runs from the treeman in the corn fields and shit, treeman rapes Sofie in pursuit of scudder thus throwing a third party into the mix?

I will have to chew on this third party possibility somemore. It is interesting that we haven't seen the Season 1 Usher representation much this season, except in scenes with Sofie. Oooh.
