it takes one to know one, she smiles

Oh, you guys!

The internet is exploding with love and flail over MCR's Desolation Row video.  I just adore it--the flail, I mean, although the video is also COMPLETELY AWESOME.

Someone on comments said "I love it when the internet happens in real life."  I love it too!  I love being part of it!  I love loving to see their faces again, along with everyone else who is feeling the same joy and relief!  I love our shared ownership of this event, how we get to enjoy the fact that OUR band is making music again.  Even people I only have a passing internet acquaintance with, we're still all OUR band, OUR boys.

There is NOT enough Frank in this video, though there are still some choice moments, like Frank, all upside down on the floor with his guitar!  He's so tiny and flexible!  And his little feet!!  *dies*

I think there was maybe also less Mikey than the world deserved, but I can't tell.  You catch him a lot over Gerard's shoulder, I guess, and also, I just don't feel as protective of him as I do of Frank right now.

And Ray!  I've heard people call him unpretentious, and I agree--he's not a spotlight hog at all, but at the same time, his presence is so commanding, especially when he's playing a solo.  And his hair, it's all long!  And his awesome guitar solo, and his wedding ring!  Ray Toro, could I love you more than I do at this moment?  I could not.

I adore the 2 Bands motif in rock videos--the band on the stage and then them being nerds (Fall Out Boy in Dance, Dance) or plotting evil plots (U2 in Elevation (yeah, be careful, it's a Tomb Raider crossover)) or being riotous and criminal!  This isn't quite 2 Bands, with two different storylines, but I still like how it branches into doublevision at the end:   the show degenerating into police-induced violence and them in the paddy wagon, while they simultaneously finish the song.  Ray falling before the riot shields and Gerard cuffed on the ground with his face mirrored in the shiny floor were particularly choice bits.

And finally, I just love this reinterpretation of the Bob Dylan song.  It's so fitting for today, which I guess is what you want from a cover.  Dylan's desolation row is all bittersweet Sixties--wry and gentle and folky and about as many verses as Alice's Restaurant.  That same poignancy still shows up in the chord progressions of the MCR version, but now it's all loud and noisy.  The sound, and the MCR video, of course, evoke a different audience.  It's the difference between a crowd that holds up lighters and a crowd that climbs onto the stage and joins in the fight.  Hail to MCR's punk roots, and to their status as a Voice of the Teenaged People!  (Do they even think of themselves as a punk band anymore?)

So, obviously, I'm on the west coast (and I'm also the last to hear about everything anyway), but if one of you somehow happened to slip into last place, behind me, here is the link to the journal of another gracious fan, where you can download the video.  Just because I would hate for anyone who wants to be part of the squee and flail to miss out on that chance.  Enjoy!  Keep enjoying!  Isn't life beautiful?
