Laura knew that technically she wasn't due for another week, but according to Doctor Hadley, she could have Laila any day and be perfectly fine. Which was why Laura was willing her body to have a contraction. It wasn't quite working, trying by sheer will to make the baby come, but it wasn't for lack of trying

Joslire went into the bedroom with a curious look,

"You want me to do what, sweetheart?"

Her shirt was up, and she was applying tape to the eviction notice. "I want you to put this just right, and take a picture," she said with a grin as she handed over the piece of paper.

Joslire read, a smile slowly spreading.

He taped it carefully over the belly, then leaned over to kiss and whisper to the bump,

"It is only because we want to hold you...well mostly."

Laura laughed. "Nintey-nine percent is because we want to hold you. The rest is because mommy wants to go more than thirty seconds without having to pee. Thank you, Laila," she said as she rubbed the sides of her stomach.

Joslire took the camera and carefully aimed.

"Say 'ice cream'," he coaxed.

Laura shot him a look, then smiled. "Ice cream," she obliged as she stood proudly with her stomach, and the notice taped on it. A few pictures she took pointing at the notice and making funny faces, and then she simply took the paper off and made a heart shaped symbol on her stomach with her fingers.

"Here," said Joslire handing her the camera, and facing them toward the mirror put his own hands on her belly making a heart.

Making sure she had the flash right so that it wouldn't glare in the mirror, Laura took more than one picture, then put the camera down and sighed, leaning back against him.

"It feels like we've wanted this for so long," she said as her hands made their way up and down his arms.

Joslire leaned down to nuzzle her cheek and kiss her neck, as he rubbed Laura's belly.

"It is more than I would have let myself want."

"Back when I was sick, when we first met...could you ever picture us right here?"

He shook his head.

"No," he replied frankly. "I knew there would be love, but I could never have imagined this."

"Me either," she said with a soft sigh, catching his eyes in the mirror. "I can't wait to see you hold her for the first time. Are you going to cut the umbilical cord?"

He looked a little surprised, perhaps a little anxious.

"I will if you want me to. Is it important to you?"

[prophetepiphany]

She nodded. "I want you to, if you think it's something you could handle doing. I think most doctor's ask the father if they'd like to."

He had been anxious about the thought of it, but hearing her say that she wanted him to caused that unease to evaporate. He nodded serenely.

"Then I will." He caressed her belly, watching her face, and his dark hands as they made patterns against her fair skin.

Since they'd met, Laura had always been fascinated by the way his skin contrasted with hers, and she watched him in the mirror.

"I love the way we look together. I love looking at us."
