It has been ages since I've posted...
This morning I decided to read Luke 2 to think about the birth of Jesus a little more. After I was done, I wanted to read a little more, so I went to Psalm 22. I often pick a Psalm or Proverb based on what day of the month it is (e.g. today is December 22nd so I chose the 22nd Psalm). It never ceases to amaze me how two randomly picked passages, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, go together so well.
Luke 2:9 The angel of the Lord came to them. The shining-greatness of the Lord shone around them. They were very much afraid. 10 The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. See! I bring you good news of great joy which is for all people. 11 Today, One Who saves from the punishment of sin has been born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord.
Psalm 22:14 (I am pretty sure these verses are foreshadowing Jesus' death on the cross) I am poured out like water. And all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like a melted candle within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a piece of a broken clay pot. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. And You lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs have gathered around me. A group of sinful men stand around me. They have cut through my hands and feet. 17 I can tell how many bones I have. The people look at me with wide eyes. 18 They divide my clothes among them by drawing names to see who would get them.
When I was in college, one semester I took two Bible courses, one on Exodus and one on Ephesians. Going into the classes, I never would have imagined how much the two books would be alike. I guess I shouldn't be surprised...they were both divinely inspired by the same person!
Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to earth to be born in a manger as a humble human being. Thank you that he lived on this earth so that he could truly understand what we humans go through. Thank you, most of all, that Jesus was willing to suffer and die for my sins and the sins of the world even though he had never sinned himself. What an amazing gift Jesus is!
