some time in December, I wrote a thing and never came around to posting
Pairing: Mesut Özil/Lira Bajramaj
Rating: PG
Word Count: 938
Disclaimer: Don't know them, don't own them, all my weird imagination.
A/N: This happened before it because public that Mesut was dating Mandy. Whatever. Like anyone cares. I also made a mix with all German songs, that sorta fit the plot. Listen
here :)
Title taken from the Tote Hosen song "Tage Wie Diese" (
which exists also in Spanish!), cut text from Sportfreunde Stiller's "Ein Kompliment" which both can be found on the mix!
Mesut never really paid any attention to women's football before. He doesn't know the players, doesn’t know anything. But then he meets Lira during their shooting for Nike and he's smitten.
She fascinates him, her whole being. Her intense gaze, her voice, how she focuses on everything she does with her whole being - her mind and her body and her heart and her soul. He loves the way she throws her hair back and how she smirks at him and how she laughs out loud, without inhibitions, without holding back.
She is beautiful - not only her body, that is for sure - but mostly her personality. She's one of those people that glow from the inside like they say - not exactly something Mesut usually thinks about without making fun of it, but it just fits Lira so well.
It's hard with their jobs but they make it work, somehow. When she gets a few days off, Lira often flies down to Madrid and they go out to restaurants or just spend quality time together in Mesut's house. When he is at training, she takes off to explore the city. Nobody knows her here in Spain and she can do just about anything she wants to do.
The rare few times Mesut actually has more than one day off he comes to visit her in Germany, they simply spend time together in her flat, not leaving for much. They are too well known in Germany and people will recognize them.
They haven't made their relationship public yet. They have only been together for a few months and they are both happy this way. They don't want everyone to know yet.
"I missed you," Lira says into his ear when Mesut picks her up at Barajas. They hug, he briefly kisses her cheek and takes her hand, squeezing it once and smiles at her. He picks up her suitcase even though she slightly protests and they leave the arrival hall together, hand in hand.
The first thing Mesut does when they are sitting in the car is lean over the console and press a firm kiss on Lira's lips. She knows that this is his way of telling her that he missed her too, that he loves her. He's just not good with words, he rather takes action.
When they’re on the highway, he takes her hand in his and intertwines their fingers.
It's good because they understand each other in a way non-footballer partners just don't understand (at least in their experiences). They both know what it's like to be on the pitch, under constant pressure. They both know what it's like to be in the spotlight. They both know what it's like to have people relying on their moves and passes and goals and then letting those people supporting them down because they cannot work wonders. They cannot save their team from losing on their own, even though it sometimes seems like they could. They are only human, after all. They get each other, know what to do when the other one feels down. They know when to step in to cheer the other one up and when to just let the other one mope and get it over with on their own.
They simply work well.
During the summer break, they are in the United States, just traveling through the country and doing all the mainstream touristy things people visiting the US usually do.
They visit New York, Boston and the Niagara Falls before they fly over to the West Coast, visit San Francisco, the national parks, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, everything. They go shopping and spend insane amounts of money just because they can. They end up in L.A. where Mesut needs to stay for preseason.
They take pictures of themselves making stupid grimaces and hold hands and kiss in public and it's fun, it's so good.
That's the advantage about America, Lira thinks. Nobody knows them there. They can be themselves and don't have to hide like they would need to in Europe.
(It's not like they really don't want people to know. It's just - they never even talked about what would happen when people found out and they both like it the way it is a lot, nobody but their friends and family knowing of their relationship. What is between them is only theirs after all and should not be for anyone else.)
Of course there are pictures on the Internet. But somehow - even though they have never talked about it before, always rather wanted to keep it private - they are fine with it. It's okay.
(Not like they could even do anything about it.)
So they are out in the public now and their pictures get taken more often when they go out. Pictures of them at romantic candlelight dinners in cozy restaurants appear, Mesut holding Lira's hand. Goodbye kisses at various airports are shown.
It's not necessarily something they would have chosen to do but since they are already known about, they decide to actually give people an insight in their relationship. Somehow, even though they wouldn't have planned it to be like this, being public about it is okay. It is okay because they know that they've got each other, that they're in this together.
After a shopping day in Frankfurt, the Bild's headline is Lira Bajramaj and Mesut Özil - Crazy in love. Underneath is a picture, Mesut's arm slung around Lira's waist, her head leaning against his shoulder. She's smiling happily. He looks down at her, equally content. They look good together.
