It began in mystery, and it will end in mystery, but what a savage and beautiful country lies in between. - Diane Ackerman

He stood on the edge of the Shire with Gandalf and looked out over the expanse of rolling hills and farms.

“All would have been lost were it not for the courage of one so small.”

Gwaihir listened to the musings of his friend with thoughtful concentration. “Did you doubt his strength?”

Silence fell before the wizard abruptly came to, smiling at some thought beyond the eagle’s knowledge. “No. The boy had strength in him.”

“Mystery alone leaves us to wonder where the strong are and where they will lead. If we open our eyes we can see before it ever comes to be.” Gwaihir’s voice streamed out cool and babbling like a brook.

“Hmmm. Indeed.” The White Wizard leaned on his staff lost in thought as only the Maiar could. “Did you know, my old friend, what would be?”

Gwaihir stretched and ruffled his feathers. “The vision of Eagles is far beyond those of any. We are not gifted with knowledge but sight.”

Gandalf laughed heartily. “They often say I speak in riddles. You are far better at them than I.”

The moment of mirth went on before it fell silent. They had come to see something and there in the distance their keen eyes saw clearly the reason for their visit. Sam had come from the house with a baby in his arms. The first of many children his future would hold.

“My she is a darling one.” Gandalf’s cheer did not touch the eagle.

“She will be the first to hear many a tale of you old wizard.”

“Old? Bah.” The White Wizards indignant response however brought mirth to Gwaihir’s large shining eyes.

“In time alone. In spirit I often wonder if that child would pass older than the Great White Wizard.”

Gandalf looked over at his companion only to laugh. “Come we have far to travel.”

Gwaihir lowered for the wizard to climb on. “You still forget it is but a breath to Minas Tirith for an eagle.”

“I do?” The wizard grew thoughtful as he positioned himself on the wizards back. “Yes, yes, perhaps I do.”

Gwaihir remained silent but his eyes told of his amusement as he took flight to see once more the Lord and High King of Gondor.
