The ceremony was ridiculously long and tedious, as these things always are. The droning on and on of the speeches had Cody Jean fighting not to yawn. Her cap and gown were warm in the large auditorium, and she fidgeted in her seat. Still, she kept looking back behind her, at two different places. There was a lot of hope on her face, even though she knew in her heart of hearts that she shouldn't let herself. When she looked back in the audience, she saw Andy and the guys, and she grinned at Andy, shrugging before looking at the door.
He had been gone so long, it seemed silly to think that he might just suddenly show up on her graduation day. Yet, everything that they did, since his departure, had been planned and executed as though he were there. Andy, especially, had stepped up to run everything exactly as him Hsu would walk through the front door any minute. Cody had grown even closer to the men, doing her part to try and make things easier for them. Over her time at the Academy, and then at the University of Zurich, she had grown more polished, mature and educated. Much of that was due to the diligent teachings of Frances and the Comte, both of whom had taught her so many things on how to become a lady and a warrior. But she still sparred with Andy, Marcus, Lars and the others, whenever she came home for breaks.
Home...funny how the ranch had become that to her over the last few years. It was home, and her room there had changed as she had changed, becoming more like her, with new decor and a set of clothing that remained there for her when she came back, even for just a weekend. But the beauty of the ranch couldn't create that feeling of roots or the commitment to all that he was. He had done that, in the too short time that he had been there with her. He had created the map of her future, and given her the fire to follow the destiny he saw. They had not had a great deal of time together, before he left. However, in that time, she had learned a lot about him, and about herself, and the meaning of words like honor, commitment, vision and loyalty. All Cody Jean needed to do was watch the way his men were, not just when he was around, but when he wasn't. Hsu would have been so pleased that in his absence there was no slacking off or loss of strength. Yes, much of that had to do with Andy MacDonald and with Marcus Johnson. They kept the entire organization on track, and they kept her on the path. Frances and Sebastian also gave Cody their strength and encouragement. In the darkest hours, when she wondered if he was ever going to return, Frances would gently turn her eyes back to the task that was her job, growing into the woman that would prove to him that his trust and his investment had been well served.
Today, as she sighed with resignation, she knew that he would miss this milestone. No matter how many times she looked at that door, he would not come through it. When they called her name, she stepped up to the cheers of the men who served Hsu Danmei, and who had been there for her when he couldn't be. Law school was next, with intern work at HSU Financial, over the summer. They would be there, just as if he were going to walk through that door. Cody Jean thanked the Chancellor, and smiled at the guys. And then she looked at the door, again, and saw Andy look, too, then he looked back at her. She nodded. It was okay. They would tell him all about it when he got home.
