Summery: Adrian thinks relationships are like flowers, they grow from fragile things that need protection, to a beautiful light in someone's life but what he really worries about is that eventually, they might wither and die.

Every relationship is like a flower to Adrian. It starts almost underground, secret. You don’t plan it but you find yourself attracted to someone, you want to know that person better and before you know it you want a relationship or find yourself in one but it is new and fragile. New relationships need protection, nurturing and care, attention and detail so that they can grow. If they are not given that growth, that light and positive thrill that a new relationship brings they wither and don’t grow, gone before they even breech the surface of what they could be.

But then they do grow, getting bigger and stronger, reaching for the light, reaching for something new to do together. Adrian remembers what that was like, something so innocent moving into a new world, he remembers the terrified thrill of realising Lewis wasn’t just his friend anymore, he was something so much more. Adrian didn’t have to hold back anymore, he didn’t have to pretend not to feel anything. Lewis was special and he was Adrian’s. It terrified him. He was moving into something new while totally unguarded, open and honest, and when Lewis told Nico, a tiny part of him wanted their best friend to disapprove so that he could run away from it all and blame someone else. He didn’t want to be the reason that flower was crushed. He didn’t want to be the reason Lewis got hurt. But Nico was thrilled and Lewis beamed even more than before as they moved from country to country, race to race, crushed into tiny hotel rooms while giggling at people on the streets below and failing at ordering room service while they chased a dream.

Lewis stopped rooming with Nico and started rooming with Adrian permanently somewhere between their first kiss and the time Adrian realised Lewis wasn’t going to run, nothing more at first, and then one bed would lie empty, playing home to dumped clothes and sheets of telemetry as they found new experiences together, waking up tangled in each other’s bodies, never freezing anymore as there was always a warm body to press against. If a relationship was like a flower then that was when they began to blossom, petals breaking free of their confides as they took new steps, terrifyingly amazing steps.

They were young, they were a bit stupid. They fought over nothing and didn’t talk when they needed to. But it didn’t break them so Adrian supposed that was when they were truly beautiful, reaching for the skies while keeping each other grounded. They made it to formula one and heads spun with dizzy euphoria. For a few desperate months Lewis thought he was going to lose the man he loved to the sport he loved doing as his hold tightened on a championship hardly anyone dared believe he could win. Adrian struggled with jealousy. How could he not? But his jealousy was no match for his pride, his happiness. He wanted it to be him, one day, but it was Lewis at that moment so that was the moment they would savour.

He couldn’t be there when he celebrated in front of the world but he was there when Lewis truly realised what he had achieved. And he didn’t plan to go anywhere. Even though he was afraid, deep down, that relationships really were like flowers and at some point, they all had to wither and die. But then some flowers could be preserved, some flowers lived forever in a way and no matter what happened, no matter how uncertain his future was, no matter how bright Lewis’ was, they still had when they were beautiful.
