Prompt Reunions
Summary Dem's been gone for six years. Saiah hasn't heard from him in five years, nine months. Now he's back.
He was standing on the bridge as they waited for the ship to dock. They being the unloading crew and himself, because most people had forgotten about the crew that set off six years ago to look for...nothing.
The ones that did remember still looked at him in pity. They still whispered to the ones who've forgotten that he's the one that got left behind. He knew the rumours. He had a fight with the driver the day before they left. He'd said the expedition was pointless. He hadn't wanted to go.
He wonders what they'd think if they knew he'd only had an illness, and they couldn't delay the trip. He doesn't say anything. He doesn't want to ruin anyone’s story.
He didn't know what to expect when the ship docks. It's the exact same ship that left, no worse for wear. Dem would never let it get to a state like that. He was good at what he did, and proud of it too. It was a good combination.
He leaned back against the wall. The crew moved forwards, swarming the ship. Jeks was the first one off the ship. He looked around, called out something to the crew and then laughed, clapping them each on the back as he pushed his way through. His eyes widened when he saw Saiah, but he didn't come over. He raised his hand in a sort of half wave and motioned over his shoulder. Saiah nodded. He got it.
Laine was next, already shaking her hair out of the uniform updo. Saiah was tempted to run over to her, to hear her bitching about regulations and how having her hair up made her scalp itchy, but she didn't even look up at him. He didn't mind. She probably had one thing on her mind, and one thing only. Sleep.
Deus came soon after, his arms filled with boxes. He nodded over them when he saw Saiah, before he put them on a waiting pallet.
"Waiting for Dem?" He asked, trotting over. Saiah nodded and Deus smiled. "We missed you, mate. Jeks' good, but he's no you. Dem wasn't happy either, you know? Said he couldn't work well with him, not with the way he could work with you." He pulled Saiah into an awkward one armed hug and sighed. "It was six fucking years of 'Saiah could do this better'. Would've come back for you, mate, just to shut him up, but I don't think we would have left again if we did."
"It's fine," Saiah said, pulling away and hoping his smile was genuine. Sure, he hadn't set foot on a ship in six years because his partner, who was fucking bonded to was buggering off around space without him but...he could live with that. Sort of. It was the lack of communication that got him. Three months into the journey, his coms with Dem had cut out. That had been it.
"I best get back to helping to crew. Laine and Jeks already buggered off?" Saiah nodded. "Bastards. Talk to you later." He knuckled the side of Saiah's jaw, the way he'd done when he'd said goodbye and bounded back to his boxes.
Five minutes later, Dem finally stepped off. He had dark glasses on, his hair was ruffled and he hadn't shaved. Trust Dem to oversleep on the day they returned. Saiah couldn't help but smile, genuinely this time. He watched as Dem slipped off his glasses, pushing them back over his hair and squinted in the dark hold. It took him fourty-five seconds to notice Saiah, and then his reaction was immediate.
"Saiah!" He yelled, shocking a few of the crew into jumping and almost dropping things. Deus just laughed. He was probably expecting the way Dem ran towards Saiah and shoved him against the wall, laughing all the while. It was classic Dem exuberance and lack of respect for the human body.
"I missed you, you ugly fuck," He murmured, nudging his forehead against Saiah's. "Why the fuck did our coms stop working? I fucking drove Deus insane trying to make him fucking fix it. I was going to kill something. I did kill something, but it was only a rodent so don't you judge me." Saiah just smiled.
