Title: One More Reason I Should Never Have Met You (Just Another Reason I Could Never Forget You)
Author:
promisethstars Pairing: Dan Nickleski/Evan Kirkendall, Evan Kirkendall/Eva
Rating: R
Warnings: none
Summary: It’s just a tour, Dan tells himself. It’s just another tour that he did with another band, and now it’s over. It shouldn’t be this hard to say goodbye to the crew he just spent the last four months or so with. It shouldn’t be, but it is.
And he’s pretty sure that it’s all Evan Kirkendall’s fault.
Disclaimer: This is pretty much just sex and white lies.
Notes: Thanks to
random_yayness for looking over this ♥ And to my kirkenwife ♥ And also
cantsaythursday for putting the idea in my head for Dan/Evan in the first place.
It’s just a tour, Dan tells himself. It’s just another tour that he did with another band, and now it’s over. It shouldn’t be this hard to say goodbye to the crew he just spent the last four months or so with. It shouldn’t be, but it is.
And he’s pretty sure that it’s all Evan Kirkendall’s fault.
This is really so stupid. It’s not like he isn’t going to see them again in, like… a week. But it’s hard when you basically spent 24/7 with the same guys for days on end, and now you all go your separate ways for a little bit.
The wait at the airport going back to Chicago is excruciating. For the first time in recent memory, he’s waiting for a flight alone. Some of the other guys are in the same airport, a few only gates away, but Dan is, essentially, on his own until he meets up with them again.
~*~
Evan drives back home after going with to drop a few of their own off at the airport. Goodbyes are always kind of bittersweet for them - it’s kind of nice to be rid of them for the time being, but he knows that in a couple days he’ll want the boys around again.
In the meantime, he’s going to see Eva. Hang out for a few days, spend some time with her. He’s barely seen her on this tour, and the sad thing? Evan didn’t really mind. He’s not sure why, but maybe it’s that somehow, the company was better this tour. He wasn’t running sound solo, after all, so sometimes it became more of a game than actual work.
His phone vibrates in the cup holder of his car and Evan picks it up, even knowing that he’s not supposed to while he’s driving. It’s a text message, and the sender’s name makes him smile.
It only takes him about twice as long as usual to text Dan back, saying to have a safe flight and whatever, and to text Evan when he gets to Chicago. Evan barely has time to put his phone down and really focus on the traffic around him when it goes off again. It notifies him of two new messages, and he presses the correct button to read them.
From: Dan
can do, bro. see you soon :)
From: Eva
hey, can’t wait to c u! <3
Evan doesn’t think about what it means that he replies to the first message and not the second.
~*~
Dan is bored. He’s at home and he’s just. So. Fucking. Bored. Tour spoiled him with always having things to do and people to hang out with, clearly.
He picks up his phone and scrolls down his contact list. Family members, other relatives, friends that don’t talk to him anymore. People that are busy or otherwise have lives that don’t have time for him, basically.
It doesn’t even make sense for him to call any of the band or crew. Dan just spent pretty much every waking moment with them for days on end; it is unlikely that they want to talk to him right now. Besides, it’s not like Dan hasn’t been watching twitter or anything - they’ve all got plans and are out with people.
Sometimes, it’s really lonely being the only one of them in Chicago. Dan feels kind of isolated from the rest in that way. He’s not like the guys who live in Baltimore, who can get together at the drop of a hat. Everyone else outside of Baltimore is busy having a life, according to twitter.
Just as Dan’s seriously thinking about just falling asleep on his couch to some bad movie, his phone rings in his hand.
From: Evan
I’m bored. Talk to me?
Dan smiles a little and replies quickly.
To: Evan
Thought you were at eva’s? ;)
There’s barely a minute before the next reply.
From: Evan
I am. Watching some chick flick she’s seen a hundred times. So I’m bored.
It’s not like he can just leave Evan like that. Dan knows Evan loves Eva a lot, but even then, there’s only so much a guy can take. Especially when it comes to the matter of chick flicks. He keeps Evan occupied during the movie, ignoring the fact that there are a few other things that Evan could be doing right now if he’s bored. Yet he’s texting Dan, and by the sound of it, almost completely ignoring Eva and the movie.
~*~
Evan’s with Eva, driving on their way to Indianapolis, when he gets Dan’s reply to him on twitter.
soundworksdan: @EvanKirkendall I miss you...
He knows from Dan’s other tweets that his flights have been delayed. They’re all supposed to get there roughly around the same time - it’s Grieco’s birthday the next night, so obviously there’s a party going down.
But Eva’s talking to him, so Evan forgets about the tweet and focuses on the words she’s saying instead.
The truth is, he misses Dan too. Their little world of sound guys was kind of shattered when they separated for the last couple of weeks, and Evan misses hanging out with Dan. A lot more than he’d like to admit sometimes, actually.
~*~
That was so fucking stupid.
Dan’s sitting there, staring at his twitter update to Evan. Evan hasn’t responded, and normally, Evan is super fast about responding unless he’s asleep. Dan knows better, though. Evan’s driving right now… with Eva. It hits him, harder than it should, that Eva is probably the reason Evan isn’t responding.
But instead of deleting the tweet or even sending another one to Evan, Dan just waits. He responds to a couple other people, tells Jeff Maker about how much flying he’s doing lately, and still just waits.
Evan’s tweet that they’re in Indianapolis is somehow relieving and at the same time pisses Dan off.
EvanKirkendall: Arrived safely in Indy. Driving is so much easier than flying! Sweet view from the hotel room too! #happytimes
He replies to Evan again after he sees that.
soundworksdan: @EvanKirkendall I don't miss you anymore. Fuck off!
It’s a dumb thing to say, but Dan’s kind of hoping that Evan will assume his earlier tweet was just messing around, and that the whole thing’s a joke. But he does miss Evan. So the tweets are not a lie, or even a joke.
He swears that his heart skips a beat when Evan finally replies to him.
EvanKirkendall: @soundworksdan <333
That’s all Evan says. He watches his replies (and Evan’s) slowly build up, with people talking about “bromances” and “why don’t you two just kiss and make up already”.
~*~
Dan’s the first one to respond to the collective replies the pair of them have been receiving on twitter.
soundworksdan: Stop with the kirken crap. I don't believe nor follow it!!!
It makes Evan laugh, because he knows Dan doesn’t mean it - he’s just fighting off the fans. Besides, Dan totally believes in the Kirken. Evan decides to remind him of that via twitter.
EvanKirkendall: @soundworksdan #ibelieveinthekirken
They don’t mention it on twitter again, but Dan talks about how much his delayed flights suck, and Evan informs him that he does, in fact, have the worst luck with flights.
~*~
Dan isn’t trying to act needy or desperate or clingy or any of that, but he sort of feels like he is? He ends up texting Ian for awhile, who is having just as shitty luck with flights as he is. He texts Jeff too, whines a little bit about Evan - never actually saying Evan’s name, of course.
Then the tweet comes through that makes him have so many mixed emotions that he’s surprised he doesn’t explode from it.
EvanKirkendall: Happy Birthday to the love of my life, @hiievaaa
~*~
“Evan, can we talk?”
It’s some of the words that nobody in a relationship wants to hear, but Evan isn’t worried. Normally, Eva’s talks are just about his touring schedule, and where she can see him during the tour. However, she’s got twitter open on her laptop, and somehow, he has a feeling that this isn’t one of those talks.
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“Evan, I.” Eva pauses and sighs, brushing her hair back out of her face. “I think we should see other people.”
“What? I don’t understand, why?” Evan’s so fucking confused right now. Things are good with Eva, they’re great with Eva. “Wait, don’t tell me this is about me being away a lot? Because I can get you to come on the bus this summer or something, if you want.”
“It’s not about that, no. Touring is what you do, I just roll with it. I always have.”
“Well then-“
“Evan. Sweetie. I love you, and I know you love me. But I don’t think you love me. No, now, come on,” she says, going on before Evan can interrupt. “You can say the words all you want, but if there’s no emotion behind them, they don’t mean shit.”
Evan doesn’t know what to say. This is Eva, the steady girlfriend he’s had for so long now. Eva, who’s been there for him even when he wasn’t around. And now she wants to break up with him because… she thinks he doesn’t love her?
“Eva, I…” Evan starts, and then he doesn’t realize what he was going to say. Tell her that he does love her? Beg her to reconsider? Say he’ll marry her?
But then he realizes. He doesn’t want any of that. Eva’s great, sure, but as much as she’s been there for him while he’s been touring, it doesn’t even compare to what the boys in the band and crew have done for him, especially in the last couple of months.
“Evan?” she asks quietly, and he comes back to the conversation from his thoughts.
“Yeah. I think. Maybe? Yeah. We should. But like. No hard feelings?”
Eva gives him a small smile. “No, none at all.”
“Um. Can I ask? Is there someone else for you and that’s why…?”
“Not for me, no.” Eva replies, a hint of mystery in her voice. “But I think that for you, there definitely is.”
~*~
Somehow, when Dan sees Evan’s tweets the next morning, he knows that something’s up.
EvanKirkendall: It's gonna be one of those days...
Evan tweets again later about Eva’s birthday, but fails to mention anything about “love of my life” like he did the night before. When a majority of the band and crew meets up later for Alex Grieco’s birthday celebration, Dan pulls Evan aside.
“Dude, what’s up with you and Eva?”
“We sort of… um. Broke up last night. Her idea. She said we should see other people.”
“Oh man, I’m sorry,” Dan says, trying to look sympathetic. The reality of it is, he likes Eva, and she and Evan always seemed so happy, but he didn’t understand why they were always so perfect. It’s like they were too perfect for it to be real and genuine.
“It’s cool, I guess. No hard feelings, we’re still friends. Though she did get a separate room from me, considering the one we had only has one bed in it.”
“Awkward.”
“Right. And I don’t know, I asked her if there was someone else, and she said not for her? But she said there was definitely somehow else for me. Kind of weird shit to be hearing from your ex, isn’t it?”
Dan’s stomach flips over and he tries to remember how to breathe and stand upright at the same time. “Yeah, that’s… weird. Look, I’m gonna go grab another beer, you want one?”
~*~
“Um hey, so. I was supposed to share a room with Ian tonight but I think he said that Grieco’s gonna stay there instead. Something about continuing the party? I don’t know. But, so. Can I stay in your room?” Dan asks, slurring his words together a little. He’s maybe - probably - had a few too many, but fuck it, it’s a birthday party, so why not?
“Sure, why not. I mean. It’s not like I’m sharing with anyone else anymore, right?”
“Right!” Dan and Evan hop in the elevator and Evan pushes the button for what he’s pretty sure is the floor he’s staying on.
It takes way long than normally necessary to find Evan’s room number and get inside the door, but once they do, Dan all but falls over on the bed. He is so drunk right now, but comfortably so. And right now, he just really, really wants to lie down and hang out with Evan, because Evan? Is pretty awesome.
“Wait, why am I awesome?” Evan asks when Dan states this out loud.
Dan shrugs. “I don’t know. Because you’re Evan?”
“Seems logical to me. I mean I am pretty awesome. Everybody seems to think so.”
All Dan can do is nod in agreement, because really, he’s never met someone who didn’t like Evan. He tells Evan that, too.
“So, you like me too, then?” Evan says, almost suggestively.
“You could say that.”
Evan pushes Dan back on the bed, back far enough so that he can lie down on his back and Evan has the space needed to crawl up and straddle him.
“Why’d you say you miss me?” Evan asks, and doesn’t wait for an answer before he keeps rambling on. “I mean we’d pretty much just seen each other. And you knew you were gonna see me today. So why?”
“I just… I do. Miss you, I mean. When we’re off tour. And totally not like I miss everybody else.” Dan doesn’t mean for the last part to come out, but it does anyway.
“What does that even mean?”
“Evan, I-oh, fuck it.” Dan reaches up and grabs Evan’s shirt, pulling Evan to him. He gets eye level with Evan, who is just staring at him, and does the only - however stupid it may be - thing left that he can think of.
Dan kisses Evan, hard, and on the lips.
It takes a second, but Evan kisses him back.
The next few minutes are a whirl of kissing and removing clothing, and before long, Dan’s situated on his back again, with Evan pressing their hips together and biting down his neck. He should almost be embarrassed at how little time it’s taken for him to get hard, but then again… it is Evan.
Evan grinds down against Dan until they’re both breathing hard, and when Evan feels Dan tense up, he bites down on Dan’s lip and pulls slightly, just enough to put something of a damper on the moan that still manages to escape Dan’s mouth when he comes.
Really, Evan’s content to just keep rubbing against Dan, who’s still pushing his hips up against Evan’s, but Dan’s evidently got other ideas. He gets then rolled over so Evan’s underneath him, and slips a hand down Evan’s boxers. His movements are a little unsure and hesitant, but a lot “please don’t stop doing that, oh my god”.
It doesn’t take Evan long either, and then they’re both lying there in a sweaty, panting daze. Dan’s not sure if that actually really just happened, or if it was the best dream he’s ever had in his life, but either way, he’ll take it.
They don’t talk, but Evan pulls Dan to him when they manage to get the blankets pulled down far enough to crawl underneath them - inebriation keeps getting in the way, like it loves to do. Dan, it turns out, is big on cuddling, and so he lets Evan pull him in, and even somehow falls asleep holding Evan’s hand.
~*~
The next morning dawns bright and way earlier than either of them would have liked. He gets the sun in his eyes and wakes up, accidentally elbowing - wait, what?
Dan turns his head to find Evan lying in bed with him and… they’re both almost naked. Oh boy.
The thing is, Dan can’t remember a fucking thing from the night before.
When Evan stirs a little and yawns, he opens his eyes and seems confused to find Dan there.
“Dude, I thought you were rooming with Ian.”
“So did I. Guess I must have crashed here last night instead.”
~*~
Later that day, after the band and crew have all emerged and are recovering from their respective hangovers, Evan decides to participate in yet another trending topic on twitter.
EvanKirkendall: #ThatAwkwardMomentWhen you wake up feeling like yourself, and brush your teeth with toothpaste.
Dan laughs a little - because when isn’t making a Ke$ha reference funny? - and types out a tweet of his own.
soundworksdan: @EvanKirkendall #ThatAwkwardMomentWhen you wake up and have no clue how you got where you are!
