Title: Stanton Writes a Bad Romance
Characters: Stanton and Ren Honjo
'Verse: Squarewarts

The scene unfolding in the small apartment was not one that Ren had ever expected to walk in on as he turned the key in the lock and opened the door. It took a few moments before he actually noticed Catty curled up on the couch, her head in the lap of a man he had never seen before, whose fingers were threaded through her hair while the other hand held up a book. With an easy grace, the book was splayed against the arm of the furniture before the man held up a finger to his lips, his startling gaze flickering over to Ren.
“I just finally got her to sleep,” the man warned before his blue eyes slid down to the woman, speaking of Catty as though she were a child instead.
“Who the hell are you?” This was definitely not a welcome situation to walk in on, but Ren kept his calm demeanor.
The man smiled, continuing to run his fingers through Catty's hair. “I'm Stanton, her partner.”
“I was under the impression that Jaina was her partner.” He popped a cigarette into his mouth, eyebrows arching as he watched Stanton.
“Also her master. I have been training her for over a year now. Such a quick learner she is. You must be proud of her.” Stanton smiled again, the curl of his lips perhaps a bit more feral than usual. He wanted to see how riled up he could get this man of hers, the one Catty called 'too damn patient for everything'. If nothing else, it would just be entertaining, regardless of the results.
Ren pulled out his lighter, flicking it open. “Time magic, right? Yeah, I think she might have mentioned something about you before.”
Stanton nodded, holding Catty's head gently as he got up from under her, movements smooth, with the grace of a man who knew how to hide in the shadows. She rolled over onto her side, tucking her face into the crook of her arm. He smiled, giving her head one last pat before grabbing his book. “Come. We don't want to disturb. She's had a long day.” He gestured to the door, the one Ren just walked through not more than five minutes ago, finding himself following the older man.
The Auror folded his arms across his chest, leaning back against the door, keeping his gaze level on Ren, who stood on the opposite side of him, taking a deep drag from his cigarette. So, he didn't like Stanton's presence. Then again, who would? A handsome man, so intimate with another's girlfriend. Jealousy, perhaps? Anger. He could read this man so well.
“Well, you're certainly easier to get along with than Rhysode,” Stanton mentioned with a hint of amusement in his voice.
“Rhysode?” Ah. Curiosity now.
“Her last lover. Annoying man. I'm not quite sure what Catty saw in him.” Catty, who deserved more than a man who had more women than just her in his bed. Stanton knew her worth enough. Men like Ganner couldn't appreciate what she was.
Ah, and there was irritation. Negative emotions really were the most interesting.
“I wouldn't worry about him,” Stanton dangled carelessly, sighing a bit and shrugging as though there was nothing Ren could do about this involvement. “He was killed a year ago in the line of duty.”
Not that Stanton really would have let those two continue on anyway.
“What do you want?” Ren finally asked, jaw twitching, fingers clamping to the butt of his smoke too hard. Ticks, all of them delicious ticks. What an amusing person.
“I wanted to meet the person my partner was so in love with, of course.”
Surprise.
“Exactly how involved in her life are you?”
“Very. I'm quite protective of the little goddess, and you're proving to be quite the distraction for her.” The amusement fell from his face then, his stare turning cold. “She needs more romance in her life. Use rose petals and candle light. Trust me, my wife loves them.” Stanton stepped forward, clapping the younger man on the shoulder. “Take good care of her.”
Ren finished his cigarette as he stared at the spot Stanton used to stand in, at a loss for words. What the hell kind of people did Catty spend her days with?

“I think he likes you,” Catty said the moment he walked back inside, smiling up at Ren.
He gave her a level stare before asking, “Were you up that whole time?”
“He woke me up when he told you to be quiet. He's a little troll, that man.” Her eyebrow twitched with annoyance, and he laughed.
“How can you tell he liked me, huh? Didn't seem like it to me.”
She paused, before smiling brightly. “Because you came back inside, of course.” Ren started moving towards her, grinning back and shaking his head. “And because he told me he did a couple of months ago. Said some romantic crap about how you were good for me and would make me settle down. Just because him and Serena decided that was what they wanted...” Catty shook her head before glancing back at her boyfriend. “What?”
“We weren't dating a couple of months ago, Catty.”
“Oh, I know. It's best not to question the things that Stanton does. Seriously.” She patted the seat beside her, grinning. “Tell me about your day.”
“I think he gave me sex advice...” He muttered.
