Taking a deep breath, Catty prepared to open up another tunnel, skin buzzing with the Force as she tapped into her power. Next to her, Kyp watched her curiously, a smile on his face as he tightened his grip on her hand.
“This is the third time we've had to do this,” he pointed out, and she smirked at him, tilting her head to look at him even as the tunnel opened up.
“Are you doubting my ability?” Not that she blamed him. Before Nefandus, before joining the Atrox, jumps like these would have been impossible. It required effort and power now, to jump back only a couple of weeks, but she figured that was because of the Force and the absence of the magic she was used to. At least she had managed to keep the smooth landings that were acquired when mastering her skill back home.
Kyp shook his head. “No way! This is... It's really cool. I never knew that it was possible.” There was a look in his eyes, like awe, and it made her want to preen.
“C'mon!” She dragged him in after her again. “Last jump, and we'll be there!”
He groaned, leaving any complaints to himself as they sped through the claustrophobic tunnel, rushing head first to the end.
Maybe it was too many jumps in one day, too much ego mixed in with her concentration, but the landing was overshot, and she was reminded of the old days of her and Vanessa and the sweet sensation of plummeting towards concrete out of a hole in the sky.
“Catty!”
She let Kyp's hand go, preparing herself for the hard landing. Skinned knees were a pain she was all too used to, but a bruised ego was another. As the ground rushed up towards them, Kyp flailed out, grabbing her arm tightly and pulling her closer to him. They fell together in a heap, bones jolting. Her eyes closed as she groaned out, burying her face into Kyp's chest unknowingly.
“Ouch,” she muttered, fingers digging into the grass. Thank the Force, they hadn't landed on the concrete. He groaned a response, the sound reverberating through his chest. She stilled, her face growing hot as she finally lifted her head up to stare down at the boy. “I, um...”
His face was equally red as they both fell silent. “Your knee...”
I landed on him. But she was frozen in place, unsure of what to do, his face growing redder. “Kyp! Are you breathing?” Panicked, her hands shook as she cupped his face.
“I... You... Catty,” he mumbled. Talking. Talking was good. Talking meant he was breathing.
And then as the realization hit her, she rolled over and got to her feet as fast as she could manage, turning away from him as she pressed her face into her hand. Her life. Right now. Why...
“That's... Oh, God, Kyp, I'm so sorry. That landing, I thought...” Her embarrassment slowly burned into irritation. Why had that even happened? Was she neglecting her abilities too much? A punishment, maybe, for relying more on the gifts from the Atrox, from the Force, than the ones her goddess had given her?
He reached up, grabbing her hand. “It's okay!”
“Did I hurt you?”
He laughed, face still red as he rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand. Her eyes slowly shifted to their hands. “I'm tougher than I look, okay? You're too small to do anything permanent.”
With a huff, she tugged her hand away from him, scowling. “Knock it off. Now you're just making fun of me!”
“But- No, I'm not! Catty...” He sighed. “We all make mistakes. You've seen mine.”
Sighing, she glanced back at him, rolling her eyes. “We're wasting time, Kyp. Aren't you ready to go spot a bad guy?” He grinned at her, nodding. After a moment's hesitation, she grabbed his hand again, enjoying the feel of his hand in hers, tugging him away from the lawn and onto the walkway leading towards the hospital.
