just the result of some casual thinking

While I was watching "Gilmore Girls" tonight in my room, I overheard Mom and Dad talking about how our friend Johnny is having some financial problems running his bar. A few weeks ago, his wife had a stroke and she's pretty much responsible for balancing the books, I guess. Dad was like, "I think WE should buy the bar and operate it instead! Yeah, I'll own it, and you (my mom) and Holly can be bartenders, and Hunter can be the bouncer!" A-ha-ha, very funny, Dad. I just love it when he talks about the whole family going into ventures like that, like he just assumes that because it's HIS idea, we're all going to follow him blindly into it. He's been like this before, especially when he presents the idea of just moving down to crappy old Alabama to be closer to Grandma Cozie, who I think could really give a shit about either me or Mom.

Hearing Dad talk about that got me into thinking more about my own future. Lately, I've been having to do some thinking about grad school and what I plan on going for, either art (thinking of taking up some art classes to brush up on my skills and applying to the Art Institute in Chicago) or for writing (and be a serious writer). I think I was talking to Zero about it last week, and he asked why I was wanting to go to grad school after all the work at IUN. Basically, I told him that my mom wants me to go on to grad school, and he just casually mentioned that I should just do what I want to do and not let my parents dictate how I live my life. He's right. I've been trying to not let my mom and dad have a huge say-so in that sort of thing. (Why else would I disregard the majority of their advice these last couple of years?) I think what I'm trying to say is that I don't want to be stuck at a job I know I'm not going to like. I think of people like Justice, who's studying her ass off in anthropology, and how devoted people like Augi and Zero are to their craft. Yeah, I'm dicking around at retail for now, but you have to do that to earn the money. But keep your fingers crossed for me for the Bath and Body Works job!
