I've played Akira for a few years without even realizing the manga existed (or maybe I did and just pretended it didn't). Anyway, even so, I've always debated the usage of Gender Pronouns for her. Since, while she dresses and acts as a male, inwardly she accepts her identity of being female and actually considers what life would be like as just "a normal girl".
Recently I've gotten my hands on a scanlated copy of the Light Novel "Mai-HiME DESTINY". It's based off the manga form of the series, but it did help me come to a certain conclusion. Within the first novel Akira makes an appearance, here Sunrise uses the masculine form of Gender Pronouns.
So henceforth, I will only use the masculine form unless for some reason she starts to openly act as a female (which, honestly, won't happen in Mayfield. probably. Okay may if Takumi has anything to say about it). Even if your character knows she's female, as a character did in the novel, I'll still use the masculine forms.
