Alright. Here's my little soapbox moment for the day.
The Salvation Army can go fuck itself. I was just reading in the paper how the Salvation Army and it's dirty little redneck Christian undermonkeys are now going haywire at Target. Why? Well, Target's now told them that they aren't allowed to have bell-ringers outside of their stores. Immediately, they cry that Target is discriminating, and looking down on a 113-year-old American tradition. All sorts of other stuff. You can read the article yourself if you want, but the moral of the story is that they believe that Target's slighting them.
In fact, Target has a company-wide ban against solicitation of any kind. They decided last January that the Salvation Army would have to play by the same rules as everyone else. They want people to be able to enter their stores without feeling harassed or like they're caught in a "gauntlet effect" forcing them to give. I totally understand this. Every time I pass by and don't shove a dollar into their kettle, I feel guilty. That's absurd. It has nothing to do with me not being charitable. I've done a lot of community service over the years. I prospect I will do more. Granted, money is not the department where I've got a lot to give... But... Regardless, the degree to which they're retaliating to this claiming they're an American tradition being discriminated against is absurd.
I stopped giving anything (even a damn) to the Salvation Army my sophomore year of college when I had a long talk with a friend of mine about how notorious they were for discriminating against homosexuals. They're really bad. It has to do with their religious roots. If you dig a little, you'll find suits pending against them for discrimination against women who are married, and all manner of religious discrimination as well.
It's frustrating, because I know that their intentions in terms of charity are good... Still, I'd rather put my money and my time into a charitable venue that doesn't decide that some employees are more deserving than others, and even worse, that some needy people are more needy than others based on things like religion, gender and sexuality. It goes against everything I believe in.
Now I read this article, and I'm like, "Alright, assholes, where the FUCK do you get off yelling at a company who's telling you only that you have to play by the same rules as everyone else, while meanwhile you go behind the backs of millions of people who donate to you, discriminate against their friends and loved ones, and then to top it all off you're found politicking for the right wing?"
Is that what peoples donations are supposed to be going for?
The best American ideal I can think of is freedom and equality. Try that one before bitching that you should get special treatment. Try bitching after you stop giving people your own brand of "special treatment."
Grr. Gets my feathers all ruffled...
