"Later that day, we visited the Jewish Cemetery in Grbavica. For me it was the most dramatic reminder so far of the inhumanity, vio¬lence and chaos of the war in Bosnia. The cemetery was one of the most bitterly contested areas of the conflict line round Sarajevo, because from there it was possible to shoot directly down into the city centre only a few hundred metres away. On the Serb side, part of the line was held by a group of extremists calling themselves the "Heroes", a dangerous bunch of mercenaries who had volunteered their services to the Bosnian Serbs. They were apparently not much interested in money or ideology, only in killing people. Most of the sniping at civilians in the area round the Holiday Inn came from this area of the Jewish Cemetery. It was even said that the "Heroes" hired out their best sniping positions to wealthy big game hunters from abroad who wanted to add a human being to their bag. Among the ranks of the "Heroes" were Japanese, Russians and even an American. Following the ceasefire, when Soubirou and the local Serb commander had tried to enter their part of the line in order to establish a French observation post between the lines, the "Heroes" simply fired over their heads and told them to go away."
