Shouldn't it be possible to select sperm and eggs for those traits? I think it would be fine to use that to prevent congenital diseases. And it's not a stretch to just make it misconduct to select cells based on sex, skin color, sexual orientation, things like that.

Well, technically, it should be possible in the future, but as of now, the only way to get the DNA out of a cell is to destroy the cell. Notice how they said that they take cells from the embryo to get the info?

It's a while since I read it, but in Brave New World I don't think they throw away unhealthy and ugly embryos. I think they create some embryos who will be less intelligent and less attractive to do the menial jobs in the society.
