I watched Blood Diamond today. I do not want a diamond ring, should I get married (although truthfully, diamonds never did much for me anyway). I cannot believe the horrors that continue in the world that do not make the news or are not common knowledge in the public. It really does sicken me that truly, as I read once, if these inequalities ( Read more... )

hey laura,

it has been half a century since we talked! I was randomly perusing your lj and was reading this entry. While I disagree with you on a few points (namely, same-sex marriage) I really do believe that this is one of the most powerful calls to our society today. Equality and human rights are the most important issues that exist in terms of healing our world, and we (me included) are self-consumed, tricked by our media, and we constantly fall to the materialist desires of the world. I'm unwise all the time.

"If our efforts were as focussed on ending poverty as they were on debating what the Bible says about same-sex marriage (I love the Bible, by the way!), imagine what could be accomplished."

I agree with this partly, but also know that there are still crimes committed against homosexuals in the name of the Bible. People continue to be assaulted, insulted, oppressed and killed in horrific ways because of how traditional understandings of the Bible have been twisted by people not acting in God at all- so advocating against crimes on the basis of sexuality is as essential as working against poverty, which is still a MAJOR issue. Debating is healthy and important, but I agree, action needs to start happening, on both of these issues.

Even though this is an old entry, what you're saying is just as relevant.

I hope wherever you are in your life, it feels right and you're able to find a way to advocate for these causes that are so important to you.

lots of love and God bless!
-Emma
