CHAPTER 8

Aiba watched Ria as she got her things together and cleared up all the left over bandages and plasters into her backpack. Since looking for the way out was a bad idea in this weather and Aiba’s health condition, they were going to a rest area for hikers which Ria knew was about an hour away. Aiba was now wearing Ria’s rain coat and was leaning heavily on Ria’s slim frame. Eating had helped him gain back some of his strength, so he had another three, stopping there since the bars were the only food she had with her.

They waited a while, and while the day turned a little brighter, the rain didn’t change. They started their trek in silence. They made slow progress, due to the heavy rain, the slippery path and Aiba’s own strength. He was still weak and the cuts from the previous night were still hurting. He supported himself on the trees they passed and on Ria as well.

Ria walked slowly next to him, the rain soaking her short sleeved shirt and cargo pants she had on. She kept an arm firmly around his waist and made a rest stop for him every ten minutes or so when she found a shaded place.

She broke the silence on their second break. They were under a large shaded tree.

“What work do you do?” she started.

“Um…. You know Arashi?”

Ria shook her head.

“Super Johnny idol in Japan?” He tried again.

She shook her head again.

“Uh… I on TV.” He said, hoping this will help, and even formed his hand to mimic a microphone.

“Ah…., that explains the cameras! I found them in your bag.” She said, amused at Aiba’s relief when she showed him his bag stuffed into her own large one.

I hope the cameras are okay….. he thought worriedly as he placed his arm around Ria’s shoulders, and they started walking through the rain again.

Aiba couldn’t tell how long they were trekking for, he just wished they were already there. Once in a while, she would hand him one of her snack bars which he would finish off in a matter of seconds.

I’m hungry as hell, but should I stop eating? I’m eating all of her food….. Aiba thought silently as he watched her pocket the snack bar’s discarded plastic wrapping.

“You eat?” he started meekly.

“Oh no, I’m fine” she smiled as she pulled his arm over her shoulder again and continued walking.

After what seemed like hours, they came upon a small cemented platform with a roof over it.

Helping him onto the platform, he leaned and sank down to the foot of one of the pillars.

Straightening her back and rolling her shoulders, she smiled down at him tiredly.

“Well, Masaki, this is the best I can give you for now.” She sat down next to him, and popped into her mouth another two of the tablets she had given him earlier.

“Now we wait for the rain to stop.”

Saturday Evening

Ria sneezed again, she rubbed her irritating nose and looked around. Aiba had fallen asleep on the cement floor.

It’s cold….Should I take my clothes off….? I don’t want to get sick, but…. She thought as her eyes glanced at Aiba, who was shivering in a huddled heap. The man was weak, and injured, but she had heard stories of how even the weakest men become dangerously strong when sexually excited. She shook her head. No! I’ll be even more cold if I take my clothes off!

She looked at her watch it was 7.30 at night.

Tsk… Stupid rain… Why did you have to come now? On the one and only day I decided to go for a walk?!

She heard some noise from behind her, and turned to see the huddled Aiba coughing. Going over to him, she found some leeches sticking onto his bare legs. He winced when she tried to pull them out. Her own legs were crawling with leeches. She couldn’t pull them out, and she couldn’t stand the sight of them either.

She had one snack bar left. Sighing, she looked up at the dark sky. Was I right in doing this…..

Aiba coughed again, and moved around restlessly. Fearing the worst, she put a hand to his forehead. He had a fever.

Damn, it’s so cold….  Aiba’s teeth chattered as he tried to go back to sleep again. He felt a faint warmth on his back, and another patch of warmth on his cheek. Blinking his eyes open, he realized that Ria had wrapped her arms around him and was hugging him from behind.

“Uwa!” he scrambled away, and regretted it instantly. The pain in his left arm began throbbing when he dragged it against the rough floor.

“Are you okay?” She checked his wounded arm again and found it beginning to swell. It was still pouring outside. She rummaged in her bag some more and found nothing to help him except the plasters and snack bars.

She looked over at Aiba. He was cradling his left arm and looked like he was going to cry.

Aiba turned around when he felt a pat on his shoulder. Ria was squatting next to him, holding out a snack bar.

“Don’t worry, we’ll get out of here!” she smiled forcefully bright at him.

I’ve been said to be the mood maker in Arashi for ten years and a stranger who doesn’t know what Arashi is is trying to cheer me up…. Aiba was tired, had a splitting headache, and was feeling so numb that he couldn’t think straight. Whimpering, he took the snack bar and stuffed it into his mouth as tears spilled down his cheek.

Feeling terrible, Ria tried to soothe him by rubbing his back. He simply cried harder.  She moved to sit next to him and awkwardly put her arms around his shoulders, cradling his head.

Aiba bent his head down on her shoulder and continued to cry. The warmth of her body was attractive against the cold wind around them, and he slipped his right hand around her waist to bring her closer and buried his face into her sticky, wet nape. Ria did her best to cover every open skin on Aiba’s body.
