I've got a question.

[The boy's voice on the other end is authoritative and firm. He's not going to accept anything that doesn't make complete sense.]

If our memories are simply a part of that machine, then what about our families? Was my father really my father? My mother? Are they in this machine somewhere, or are they simply a part of my ( Read more... )

[In Japanese, and wordy with it, too. Stray particles, stray particles everywhere.]

Yagami Light, I see. It's a lot of questions you have, not just one. Well, hello, Light-kun.

[This girl's voice is far too young to be as bold as all that, calling him as she does, but- well. Already done.]

From whom should you like the answers, then? You'll get plenty of bias, that is the problem.

I have more questions than just those, but it's a good start, don't you think? [He's a little startled by the familiar address, but does little more than take note of it.] What's your name?

There are worse starts to make, at least.

I am Kurookano Shijima. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

It's nice to meet you too. Where in Japan are you from?

I'm a traveler, you see. Commonly, though, Kouga, Shiga.

I see. I'm from Tokyo myself, and I haven't traveled much.

That's a pity. Though, you may not be able to appreciate traveling as much in your youth.

Do you think so? I'd have loved to have gone to America, at least, so that I could practice my English. Seems it's much better here without my even needing to try.

Ah, you've improved just like that? That's actually very strange to think about. Convenient, at least, since it is the commonplace language, but very, very strange.

A point for the 'it's fake' case, maybe.

Maybe. Maybe I knew English all along, but you're right, it is strange. None the less English is my second language. I think I could speak it like a native, but I'd know it every time I opened my mouth. This is different, like speaking Japanese. I know it.

You can't speak English?

A strange feeling, it sounds like.

I can, but it isn't due to this place.

It is. You learned English, then? At school?

Japan and China and North America.
