I padded along in silence, my bare feet digging into the dirt as I walked. None of the others would venture this far out into the woods, as if they still needed to cling to their humanity. Stay close to the cabins, to civilization. They should be embracing the gift they'd been given. We weren't human, we were pack ( Read more... )

The wolf inside me started to bristle when Inger came closer, but he wasn't a threat to me, so I shoved it back down. "I was thinking more about tanning the hide, making some nice soft leather."

Inger touched the neck wound and I couldn't help but smile when he wiped the blood off on the ground. Pulling my knife out, I started to clean my nails. "Figured I should clean it out here, some of the wolves still get squeamish around blood and guts." I snorted. And they called themselves wolves.

"This is going to be messy, so if you don't want to watch, that's okay." Taking the knife I start to gut the deer, tossing what no one is going to want to eat into the bushes for other animals to enjoy. Blood is coating my arms to the elbows and I don't care, it's part of hunting. The deer is still warm, body is starting to get a little stiffer though.

My wolf whines at the sight of all that nice flesh. Shooting Inger a glance, I reach in one more time and pull the heart out. "Don't suppose you'd like a bite?" Holding the heart out towards him, I licked the blood from the fingers of my other hand. Food always tasted better when you killed it yourself.

I tilted my head at the dark red and brown organ in Jacob's hand, dripping and not looking at all like a heart should. Smelt like condensed blood. "You know, before I was a wolf, I was a vegetarian," I mentioned idly. "And cooking the meat is always healthy..." Though, as disgusted as I really should be, I was still fascinated.

I took the offered heart, felt the weight of it in my hand, felt the still lingering warmth. My wolf was, naturally, very curious, glancing at Jacob to check that taking a bite would really be okay. The human me would rather hand it back and go make toast and slather hummus on it instead.

"Hmm. I wouldn't want to part you from your meal, as of yet," I said, handing the heart back to him and staring at my palm, which was now bloody, and grass would just stick rather than wipe it away. I gave in to what my wolf was telling me to do and started licking it clean, glancing at Jacob nervously. What if I offended him by turning down the bite? No, he was nice enough, in this pack, hopefully.

He's looking at the heart like he almost expects it to leap up and bite him. "Carnivores still need to have some greens in their diet." I run my tongue over my bottom lip, catching any of the blood I may have missed. "A true hunter always eats the heart raw. Hunters have been doing it for hundreds of years. Besides, you cook the heart, it gets tough, doesn't taste as good."

Inger finally took the heart from me and I watched closely to see if he'd actually take a bite. It wasnt't like I'd offered him a chicken leg, this was a heart. He glanced over at me, and I just gave him a small smile. At least he was making the effort and hadn't dropped it on the ground in disgust.

I take it back and watch as he licks his palm clean. Now that was a good wolf. He'd never be an alpha, was too jumpy, but Inger had a lot of potential. Took a big bite from the heart, feeling blood drip down my chin. It was almost like eating an apple. A blood-filled treat. Finished eating and looked over at him. "So why were you out here?"

I watched as he consumed the heart, human in his way of going about it, but wolfish in his choice of food. I let him eat as I sat down out of my crouching, drawing my knees up and picking at the grass again, it was a habit. Folding my legs, I looked at the carcass, which lay open, insides for all to see, though mostly cleaned away. The animal had a lot of meat on it, it would probably feed us all, though we did have thinks in pantries that we could eat. I doubted Jacob would really live off what creature comforts civilisation could give. Personally, civilisation had paper, and toasters, so I had no problems with retaining that bit of me.

I looked up when he talked, having finished the bloody meal. "Out here... it's a nice day. And there's someone new coming today, and other people too, I think. Planned and unplanned. So I wanted to be out of the way. But not too far. People still snooping around." I put my hands, immitating holding a rifle. That's what they carried, after all. I lowered my arms.

Loved being out here, it was just like my place in Montana. Nothing better than living off the land and enjoying what Mother Nature had to offer. Not that I didn't like civilization, it was just too noisy and I could feel boxed in.

A new pack member. That was always fun. We did have a pecking order, just like regular wolves. Be interesting to see where the new person fit in. I frowned a little when he mentioned unplanned people. Looked at what his hands were showing and the wolf inside me bristled with rage.

"Someone with a gun was this close to the pack? Soldier or a hunter?" Hunters could be forgiven, they were harmless, but soldiers... they were very dangerous. Oz would need to know about this. Half the pack weren't cut out to be fighters, and the rest might not be able to defend themselves properly.

I stood up and bent down to pick up the carcass, hoisting it up on my shoulders. I would need to hang it on the hook I'd made behind my place before it would be ready for for everyone to eat. "You want to come back with me or stay out here?"
