2010.12.04 - Painting the Axis Wheels
*I've been bad about updating this properly over the past few weeks because I've been too busy and distracted, but I started on a project to paint my wheels last weekend. This post will cover all of the steps taken up to this point.
- Removed and cleaned wheels
- Sprayed two wheels with white Plasti-Dip
- Sprayed red metallic on top of Plasti-Dip on one wheel
- Removed Plasti-Dip coating from wheels
- Thoroughly cleaned wheels again
- Masked and scuffed wheels
- Used air compressor and tack rags to clean wheels again
- Primed wheels with white Rustoleum "Clean Metal Primer" (7780830)
* I had planned to paint the wheels white or black and was using the Plasti-Dip as a temporary way to try out different options. I decided that the white was too ostentatious and black was too dark, but that gunmetal or a metallic gray might be a good choice. Upon prompting from my father, I sprayed one of the wheels with a metallic red and to my surprise I liked it quite a bit. It was not nearly as conspicuous or ostentatious as I had originally expected it to be, so I decided that I would paint them red.
* I had originally planned to use Rustoleum's white "All Surface Primer" as I have had good results with it in the past, but it seems as though it has been discontinued as no one in my area stocks it or can order it any longer. I considered purchasing some online, but then I found this "Clean Metal Primer" at Lowe's and decided that it sounded promising.
* I only picked up one can of the clear High Performance Wheel Coating because I wanted to use it on a few test samples before committing to it. The test samples look good, so I will probably need to pick up a second or third can.
