I have been way, way remiss in commenting on summer shows. Let's fix that.
Stuff I'm watching now...
WEEDS - What is not to love? You've got Albert Brooks...euthanasia by fusebox... Nancy making runs over the border in her Prius and peeing in a cup...and Celia in jail getting cornrows. Though that scene at the end of 4x04 made me feel really, really bad for Celia -- that’s a first. An amazing feeling. As long as Kevin Nealon sticks around, everything will be fine.
Check out this goofy "bromance/homance" promo spot, it’s such fun I had to upload it to youtube for you! Crams about 80% of what I love about this show into a mere 2 minutes:

Guilty Pleasure #1:
SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL Naughty, sassy, and incredibly modern. In ten (or a hundred) years, after prostitution has been legalized across the Western World, I'm sure this program will seem incredibly quaint. For now I am really enjoying it, Billy Piper (from DOCTOR WHO!) is fantastic.
Guilty Pleasure #2:
SWINGTOWN I know a few of you out there are with me on this one! Come now…naughty fun with Molly Parker, early feminism, swinging, skinnydipping, uptight neighbors, playing Twister stoned, 70s 'staches, hot stewardesses, 10-year-old porn mags hidden in the garage, getting hot for teacher, disco pool parties, the Harry Reams Defense Fund…and POT BROWNIES! Dig that, sistah. Meanwhile the show is endearingly 1970s-earnest, which is disarming given the sexy subject matter and it’s not-too-subtle modern messages about family and sexuality.
Interestingly, if you were to watch the above three shows, plus MAD MEN, plus the documentaries
INSIDE DEEP THROAT and
SEX: THE REVOLUTION, you would encapsulate the entire American sexual revolutionary experience, and white middle-class American feminism, for the past 40-50 years. Neat, huh?
[It looks like VH1 is about to rebroadcast SEX: THE REVOLUTION on July 24th, check it out!]
...and...Stuff on the way...
This week beginning Tuesday: Joss Whedon's DOCTOR HORRIBLE SING-ALONG BLOG
Per Mr. Whedon hisself, Act 1 will start free net streaming this Tuesday, Act 2 on Thursday, Act 3 on Saturday…and everything is yanked on Sunday night. Here are
a few more tidbits from the man to boot. Whedon is so stunningly, brilliantly
in demand and
busy right
now that it makes me want to sob with joy. My burning desire to read WHEDONESQUE all day is in full effect at the monent.
July 14th:
SAVING GRACE I don’t even watch cop procedurals, and I know some folks are hating on this show…but Holly Hunter is just so, so amazing. For us older grrls, this is really a must-see if you need a summer sass-fix.
Here's a clip from season 2 up on TNT's site…and
Seat42F, which is fast becoming my new favorite TV site, turned me onto
EmbraceYourGrace.com, which sounds fun for when I get bored in about a month.
July 17th:
THE GONG SHOW I know this is going to be utterly ridiculous, but it’s got Dave Attell who I like…there are some fun guest judges (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Andy Dick, and Kate Walsh, huh?)…and I still have such warm memories of watching the goofball original show back in the day. I’m sure this will end up boring me, like all other reality shows. We shall see.
July 27th:
TIM AND ERIC AWESOME SHOW GREAT JOB! I think I’ll be sampling this craziness over the summer…If you don’t know why, go poke around youtube or the
Adult Swim site. Heh heh.
July 27th:
MAD MEN I realize most of you are either already enamored with this show and don't need to hear any more hype from me; or, you are just ignoring it. So be it, but here are my linkspam anyhow...
...Do I need to mention that season 1 DVD is out, season 1 is on iTunes and VOD (
for some of you), there's a season 1 marathon
this weekend on AMC, and season 2 begins July 27?
...There is
an exhibit running here in New York City till September at the Public Library called "The Real Men and Women of Madison Avenue." I want to see it soon.
Here's an interview with one of the execs featured in the exhibit (I remember his work well, especially the Maxell and Hebrew National ads). He has some interesting things to say about women in the ad biz, and about MAD MEN.
...Have you seen the fantastic S2 marketing going on now, like those Grand Central
subway car skins? This
Ad Age magazine insert that apes a 1960 newspaper? AMC's official blog has posted an interesting explanation of
how they created this season's main print advertising image (a good example of what my company does, only we do it for movies). I love that their sketches originally had him smoking, natch.
...Have you heard about this
"win a walk-on role" contest AMC is holding? Did you also catch that it's a walk-on in SEASON THREE? Is this a taciturn renewal notice, or are they all just being super-optimistic? By the way you can vote on the submitted screen test vids: here are
my two faves so far. Hardy har.
...The TCAs have begun, and Thursday began with the MM presentation. Here's a few bits from
Watch With Kristen, the
LA Times, and a Matt Weiner interview from
The Watcher.
...AMC has posted many
S2 pretty pretties for you graphics hounds!
...NYC residents note: on Monday July 28th, the
Bryant Park outdoor film series will screen
THE APARTMENT, one of the films the creators of MAD MEN were
very influenced by. And one of my favorites from that decade.
