The Suspense Is Terrible - I Hope It Lasts

The original Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was released in 1971. It started a kind family tradition that I don't know that I've ever fully from. Specifically, it started a tradition of my mother showing me films and shows that freaked ( Read more... )

I used to be so embarrassed by the antics of The Partridge Family, and The Brady Bunch that I'd run out of the room. The scene in Happy Days where Fonzie's robot died reduced me to a sobbing blubbering mess. At the end of E.T. where he's so sick I went through three packets of tissues I was crying so hard.

As a small child I watched a BBC production of The Mikado and loved it so much I drew all the characters in school the next day. Knocked the socks off my teacher. Also watched Dumbo about the same time, it was more than I could bear. The scene where Dumbo's mother cradles him in her trunk when she's locked up in that caravan is the only part I remember, with absolute horror and sorrow. Have ne er watched it since. And during the same time period my mother made me watch the first televised film of the WWII concentration camps.

So much of what you write here I can relate to. I too am completely character driven when it comes to reading, tv, film. If I like the characters I will watch just about anything. I have enjoyed my nightmares since I was a child. I had very long, colorful, and detailed dreams.

It's so good to know I'm not the only one. :-)

Love your movie-watching gear! Wish I had had it. I had to make do with closing my eyes and putting my hands over my ears. I really love this entry! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!!

Oh my goodness! The "Baby of Mine" scene in Dumbo. I can't even hear that song. Or the scene where Bambi realizes his mother is dead. *sobs*

I empathize with you 100% about those sitcoms. Yeah, sometimes stuff is just too cringe-worthy to endure. I mean, I like drama, but somehow poor social behavior makes me acutely uncomfortable too.

Hurray for enjoying nightmares!
