This is my entry for week #6 of therealljidol.

I'm Coming To The Best Part Of My LifeThe final straw for Cass Elliot was when fellow The Mamas and The Papas member John Phillips insulted her in front of her hero, Mick Jagger. She quit the band that night and only returned to record their contractually obligated final album under duress ( Read more... )

Man, that Cass Elliot was a sexy fox. I noticed you used a cut off version, so I went and looked and boy oh boy I wouldn't mind seeing an entire set of that series. Her face was cute and she was big, but it looks she she shapely in all the RIGHT places.

This was a fun read especially since you got really critical and biased hatred on John Phillips... understandbly.

BTW, these are the two versions of Dream A Little Dream that mean anything to me:
Mel Torme and Mickey Thomas:

and just Mickey Thomas:

Right?

Also, I am so pleased that somebody out there is still willing to pay homage to the Two Cories. Poor Corey Haim. So sad.

Me and Corey H. were born on the same day... I have no choice. Okay, that's not true... I have a choice, but Dream A Little Dream really was a major film for me growing up as were the various films Corey did with his girlfriend Nicole Eggert.

hmmm...

I've heard her singing before, from the Mamas and the Papas, of course. Some of the songs still get airplay on Oldies Stations, but not sure if I'd ever heard any of her solo stuff. I don't know if I even knew she had a solo career. Considering her daughter is just a few months older than me, I really never got a chance to hear her as a living person rather than the ghostly echoes of the recordings.

I looked/listened to some of the other YouTube videos, and I think the one I liked the best was one of them doing "Dancing in the Streets" because she looked like she was having fun just dancing along as they were singing.

(I'd really have loved to hear her voice as a disco diva. And (going three decades earlier) I'd loved to have heard a collaboration between Cass and Cyndi Lauper.)

And yes, it sounds like Mr. Phillips does deserve to have a bad afterlife.

She did have a successful solo career, though not as much as with The Mamas and The Papas. I think she generally sounds great on her solo singles, but the material is often weak and contains many of the worst of the early 70's commercialized version of hippie culture. This was her other big hit and I think you'll get the idea:

It was tragic that she was body-shamed. AW

What is positive, at least, is that in 2015 many of us at least recognize that body shaming is a lousy thing to do. Back then, it was commonplace..

I think John Phillips was a nasty piece of work, but he really knew how to write a song for a few years there. The Mamas and The Papas had some lovely harmonies and great arrangements. Even if he did resist inviting Cass to join the group, he had the good sense to let her take front and center once he realized people loved her.
