Not seeing what self-hate has to do with it. In the experience I wish I didn't have, pure ape-status plays like the above do well with people who don't reflect on themselves enough to be anything but self-satisfied.

I was gonna second the "self hating" question, but on reflection the Republican strategy looks a lot like Borderline Personality Disorder, which makes the "self hating" label quite plausible
