Ugh... having apt-lookers walk up to me to ask me questions while I'm in my living room pretending to work just brings out the worst in me. I can tolerate them being very brief uninvited guests, but I am not their fucking museum exhibit ( Read more... )

hate, moving

Okay, I can understand misanthropy, I'm there. The visits annoy you, sure.

But really, put yourself in their shoes: you're looking at an apartment. Here's the current tenant, who does not have a financial interest in you giving up $BIGNUM every month for rent. Maybe he'll give you the skinny on important info, like if the bedroom is freezing in winter, if the gas stove tends to explode, and how much utilities cost in this area.

Does it really cost you so much to help out a fellow member of the rentatariat?

Responses like this are part of why I post growly stuff like this.

Still... Quizzing a total stranger in their own home (even if it is not their home for much longer) about why they are moving out (forcing me to either lie or reveal information about my personal life to them) really seems tacky to me.

I agree that asking for personal information is tacky. But maybe just a "The apartment is great/okay/terrible, I just need to move" would be acceptable?

I may have a peculiar sense of politeness in this case, but I've always felt it was bad form for the landlord to show off the place with a tenant still living there. I mean, the tenant has the lease for a certain amount of time, is paying for it, and renting it out to a new tenant after the current one is gone is really the landlord's responsibility, not yours. I've always found it awkward from both sides, too. I hate being the person looking at an apartment and having someone else's stuff in it so I can't really tell how much space there is, how clean the apartment will be after they move, etc.
